The Wine Cap can grow to an impressive size, and is sometimes known as the King Stropharia or Garden Giant when grown in North America. The species was first described from rich, cultivated ground in Massachusetts, but its actual origin is unclear since it is nearly always found in gardens, arable fields, or (more recently) in woodchip mulch. In the 1960s, the Wine Cap was promoted as a garden crop in eastern Europe and it has since become a popular mushroom for home-growers (and some commercial growers) elsewhere, although it is said to cause gastroenteritic problems for some people.
