Chapter Two

Noni took a long swig from her water bottle before she followed Harmony down the stairs. “Girl, I’m about to pass out. Rashad never made us sing that hard. And we never sounded that good, either. Brother Dorian ain’t no joke.”

“Yeah, he’s pretty good.”

“Pretty good, huh? That’s it? Girl, bye! He plays that organ way better than Rashad ever could, he has a silky voice, and he teaches parts like a pro.”

When Harmony didn’t reply, Noni looked at her out of the corner of her eye and followed her line of vision over to the organ, where Dorian was still sitting with a group of female choir members huddled around him. Amari was sitting right next to him on the bench, smiling like a toothpaste model as he played some complex composition.

“I saw you and Brother Dorian talking when I first walked in. Girl, you were showing all thirty-two of your teeth. What was he saying to you that had you blushing and squirming so much?”

“He caught me singing before rehearsal, and he asked me to sing lead on the first song he taught us this evening.”

“What? Oh my God, that’s great, Puddin’! It’s about time you blessed the church with that pretty voice!”

Harmony clamped her hand over Noni’s mouth and pulled her out into the vestibule. “Girl, bite your tongue. I’m not about to sing solo. I just made him believe I would.”

“So, you lied to the man? Did you give him a fake phone number, too? I saw you saving your number in his phone. Yeah, I caught you.”

Harmony’s jaw nearly dropped to her chest, but not a single word came forth. She just stood in place, shocked speechless, looking at her sister-in-law with wide eyes. Noni knew her too well. They had become inseparable twenty years ago in New York City the day before the NFL Draft. Harmony had been an impressionable 10-year-old little girl back then who’d instantly accepted her oldest brother’s girlfriend as the big sister she’d never had in a house full of brothers. The two had bonded over their shared love for future Super Bowl Champion Nathaniel “Nat” Baxter and good music. They had been down like four flats on a Cadillac ever since.

Dropping her eyes to stare at her feet, Harmony shyly mumbled, “I didn’t give Dorian a fake number. I couldn’t. I had to give him my real number so he wouldn’t call me out in front of the whole choir. I’ve got to meet him somewhere tomorrow evening for a vocal session. He’s going to teach me the verse and ad-libs to ‘Flowing Favor.’ He kinda twisted my arm.”

Noni reached out and pulled Harmony into a warm embrace. “Oh, Puddin’, he must really want you to sing that song to have pressed you that hard. Do you want to sing lead for him?”

Harmony stepped back, looked into Noni’s eyes, and nodded. “Yes.”

“All right now! The real singing sensation is about to make her mark.”

“Ssshhh. Noni, lower your voice. I don’t want Amari or anyone in her crew to hear us.
