Chapter 18

When Alastair and Sherlock got to the office the next day, there was a call waiting from Lieutenant Hendricks. Alastair called back and caught him on the way to a meeting.

“Good morning, Elton, returning your call.”

“Hey, Todd told me you were at Enjoie yesterday practicing. Hmm, I need to get serious about my game, you guys are pushing me!”

“Yeah, I ran into Todd. I was there to get away from the office and step back from my two open cases. I’m starting to overanalyze them.”

“Oh, boy, always a trap for a cop. Stay with the evidence and let it take you forward. Well, that’s what I tell the guys and we all struggle to do it. I got a call back from the Rochester police. Captain Givens is happy to help. There’s a couple of guys there who have the history on the drug business back then. Give the captain a call and read him into your investigation. He’ll put you with his guys. You may have to go over there and meet with them. I think it’s the way to go. No substitute for face-time and you know cops; we love to be smoozed!”

“Should I bring doughnuts?” laughed Alastair.

“Only if they’re Krispy Cremes. We cops are fussy eaters!”

Alastair called Captain Givens and briefed him on the case and progress to date. The length of time since Raymond disappeared was a worry to the captain.

“It’s such a long time, Mr. Stewart. I hope his mother realizes that the odds are very long on finding him and if we do, the outcome may not be what she is hoping for.”

“I’ve had the conversation with her about this. I think she and her husband understand the situation. I’ve approached the case in a very segmented manner. We only move forward if we have something to build on. I don’t want to take her money and just tickle this. The poor woman is dealing with a recurrence of cancer. She’s not sure of her outcome and wants to take another look for her son. I agree with you captain. Even if we can find him, he’s probably dead. It’s been a long time.”

“I’ve a couple of guys here who go back to those days. Let me review it with them. Can you come over there to meet with us?”

“Absolutely. I’d also like to bring one of my investigators with me if that’s Okay.”

“Not a problem. Can you also send us a soft copy of your case notes and whatever else you think may be of interest? I want to make sure we’re up to speed when we meet.”

“Sure, I’ll get that out this morning.”

“Okay, I’ll come back to you with some windows for a meeting.”

After the call, Alastair called Raymond’s mother. He had made a point of keeping her up to speed on the case. He knew it was always on her mind and wanted to try and alleviate some of her worry.

“Marilyn, we think the two murders in the lot may be tied into the drug trade out of Rochester back then.
