Chapter Fourteen
Oliverâs recovery was instantaneous, but it pleased Camilla that it took him two more days to guess the type of changer she was, despite his waking in the stable to face an enormous black alicorn. And she gave him several hints until he guessed correctly.
The look on his face left a permanent smile on hers for hours.
When reports that the influenza spread like phoenix fire through town, Camilla and Aline went to work healing who they could. Aline used her small reserve of harpy elixir and Camilla made secretive calls to those who could either keep her secret or were left alone and unconscious so she could be discrete and remain anonymous. Mr. Quinn and her father were not happy about the risks she took, but she would not forgive herself if she did not help.
It warmed Camillaâs heart when she learned Mr. Quinn worried, but between her healing missions and his endless patrols, they rarely saw one another.
He managed to corner her early one morning, though. She caught him on the front porch, blocking her path as she tried to slip out. She had ventured to Mrs. Wheelerâs house for several days hoping to find her asleep with no luck. When she learned the wealthy ladyâs condition was worsening, Camilla hoped the early morning hours would prove a success.
Mr. Quinn stood as a sentinel near the railing, his posture rigid and proper with his hands clasped behind his back. His eyes narrowed, perhaps to look stern, but softened when their eyes met.
âMust you go out again?â he asked, removing his cap. âIf someone were to see what you areâ¦â His voice hitched, but was most likely the result of recently awakening.
âNo one has seen me,â she assured him. âWell⦠other than Mr. March and Oliver, but they have both sworn to keep my secret safe.â
âIt is justâ¦â his eyes lowered to the hat he twisted in his hands, as if kneading his worries into the brim. âI am so happy you are finally accepting what you are, but you are new to this and there are some who wouldâ¦â He shook his head with a bitter smile and looked at her again.
âGo on?â Camilla asked, feeling her pulse quicken. She could not imagine whatever it was he implied, but it terrified her to hear the answer.
The smile fell, and he bridged the gap between them, tossing his hat onto the rocking chair near the door and reaching as if to take her hands, but dropped them self-consciously.
Camilla stretched her fingers, lifting them. She wanted him to take her hands, but did not dare hope the gesture meant what she desired.
He stared at her, his eyes darting back and forth from her eyes to her lips as worry lines deepened in his brow. She smiled and swallowed her fear by reaching out to grasp both of his hands. He squeezed her fingertips and returned her smile with a slight upturn of the corner of his mouth. But it did not reach his eyes.
