The Narrow ★ MODERN BRITISH/GASTROPUB With a stunning riverside location, open fire in winter, terrace, and large conservatory, the Narrow couldn’t fail to be popular. Add the undoubted talent of Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen team and you have a winner. The bar menu is everything you’d expect from a traditional pub: fish and chips; sausages; Scotch egg served with that English staple, HP (brown) sauce. The restaurant menu majors in dishes of modernized classics such as beetroot cured salmon with horseradish for starters, and slow-cooked duck with braised red cabbage for mains. Interesting beers from breweries such as Adnams or Meantime in Greenwich, cheerful service, and good value for money—it’s not surprising that the Narrow is packed with contented diners.

Les Trois Garçons ★ FRENCH Walk into Les Trois Garçons and you enter a fantasy, or possibly a nightmare, according to your taste. The interior of this former Victorian pub is full of glittering, lurid-colored and crystal chandeliers, old handbags hung from the ceiling, stuffed animals, and general bric-a-brac. The three “garçons,” Hassan Abdullah, Michel Lassere, and Stefan Karlson opened the restaurant 10 years ago and have not looked back since. The menu is equally flamboyant, offering dishes that some find sublime and others just too over the top. Try their famous foie gras cured in Sauternes and cooked au torchon (in a tea towel), or perhaps fish and shellfish with couscous, chorizo, samphire, carrots and Pernod and lemon sauce. This expensive restaurant is the place to go if the culinary world seems drab and boring.

Eyre Brothers ★ PORTUGUESE/SPANISH On the borders between trendy Shoreditch and the more staid City, Eyre Brothers attracts diners from both camps. The restaurant is elegant with wooden walls and partitions, interesting art on the walls, and the comfortable feeling that comes from a staff that knows exactly what it’s doing. The cooking is a mix of Iberian influences plus inspiration from the former Portuguese colony of Mozambique. Try superb Iberico hams; truffled globe artichoke with poached egg and three different beans; marinated pork casseroled with clams accompanied by fried potatoes; baked salt cod. The open fire is used for meats including rib steak, and the fish catch of the day. The tapas bar is great for a quick, cheaper meal. There’s also a good list of wines, and of course many sherries.
