Where to Stay

Maui has accommodations to fit every kind of vacation, from deluxe oceanfront resorts to reasonably priced condos to historic bed-and-breakfasts. Before you book, be sure to read “The Island in Brief,” earlier in this chapter, which will help you settle on a location.

Remember that Hawaii’s 13.42% accommodations tax will be added to your final bill. Parking is free unless otherwise noted. Also, if you’re booking at an upscale hotel, be sure to ask if there is a “resort fee” ($12–$35 a day) tacked onto your bill.

Central Maui

If you’re arriving late at night or you have an early morning flight out, the best choice near Kahului Airport is the Courtyard Maui Kahului Airport, 532 Keolani Pl. (www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/hnmmk-courtyard-maui-kahului-airport; 866/430-2692), featuring 138 air conditioned units with small refrigerators, free Wi-Fi, and iPod docking stations, starting at $269 a night. For a cheaper airport hotel, book the Maui Beach Hotel, 170 Kaahumanu Ave. (www.mauibeachhotel.net; 866/970-4168 or 808/954-7421). The nondescript, motel-like rooms (the standard room is so small, you can barely walk around the queen-size bed) start at $119 and include free airport shuttle service (6am–9pm only). Both are okay for a night, but neither is the place to spend your entire vacation.

Wailuku

Old Wailuku Inn at Ulupono This 1924 former plantation manager’s home offers a genuine old Hawaii experience. The theme is Hawaii of the 1920s and 1930s, with decor, design, and landscaping to match. You’ll feel right at home lounging on the living-room sofa or in an old wicker chair on the enclosed lanai, where a full gourmet breakfast is served in the morning. The inn is located in the historic area of Wailuku, just a few minutes’ walk from the Maui County Seat Government Building, the courthouse, and a wonderful stretch of antiques shops.

2199 Kahookele St. (at High St., across from the Wailuku School). www.mauiinn.com. 800/305-4899 or 808/244-5897. 10 units. $165–$195 double. Rates include full breakfast. 2-night minimum. Amenities: Jacuzzi; free Wi-Fi.

West Maui

In addition to the following choices below, you may want to consider the oceanfront condos at Lahaina Shores Beach Resort, 475 Front St. (www.lahainashores.com; 844/230-3933). Rates are $195 to $300 studio double, $355 to $415 one-bedroom double, and $355 to $405 one-bedroom penthouse double. 3-night minimum. Parking is $8. Value-priced Old Lahaina House, 407 Ilikahi St. (www.oldlahaina.com; 800/847-0761 or 808/667-4663), features comfy twin- and king-bedded doubles for just $109 to $159; it’s about a 2-minute walk to the water just across Front Street.

Lahaina

Moderate

Best Western Pioneer Inn This historic old hotel, built in 1901 and located in the center of Lahaina, overlooks the streets of Lahaina and the harbor (just 50 ft. away). The remodeled rooms all have vintage-style (but up-to-date) bathrooms. A restaurant, good for breakfast, and a bar with live music are downstairs.

658 Wharf St. (in front of Lahaina Pier). www.pioneerinnmaui.com. 800/457-5457 or 808/661-3636. 34 units. $170–$275 double. Amenities: Restaurant; bar w/live music; outdoor pool; free Wi-Fi.

Inexpensive

Lahaina Inn If you like old hotels that have genuine historic touches, you’ll love this place. As in many older hotels, some of these antiques-stuffed rooms are small; if that’s a problem for you, ask for a larger unit.
