Chapter Fifteen
WINTER BREAK IS ending, and Iâm not very enthused. I have enjoyed my time away from school and not having to see Gareth. But most of all, I have enjoyed reconnecting with my friends. They are the people that complete me. They are my world, and Iâm horrified to think about how I almost gave them up for a guy.
Yes, I may have loved Gareth, but the love I share with Cydney and Matt is different. It is stronger and more developed. They proved to me fear isnât worth hiding behind. They are the epitome of loyal friends. Our friendship has shown me what I felt for Gareth was in fact love and not some lustful crush or infatuation. This makes the break-up hurt more because I know I truly loved him. I owe them everything. So lucky to have them by my side, which is where they are when I tell my parents Iâm gay.
âIâm going to tell my parents Iâm gay,â I say as we are playing Mario Kart in Mattâs bedroom. âTonight.â
Cydney claps because she has been dropping hints that I need to rip off the bandage with my parents. She has mentioned over and over my parents will love me no matter what because Iâm their son, but I still have this fear coming out will not go over as well with my parents as it did with Cydney and Matt.
âI know you are nervous but donât be. I know they will love you no matter what, Tobi. You are their son, and you have an amazing relationship with your parents some kids would kill for,â she responds with an unwavering smile.
âI know Iâm their son, but my dad typically turns the channel when a gay couple comes on TV, and my mom labels her coworker as her âgayâ coworker. What if that is because they find their relationships or lifestyles disgusting and deplorable?â I lower my head, feeling defeated. âI donât think I can live in a world where my mom and dad arenât in my life or donât love me for me. I have read stories online and seen television shows and movies where parents kick their children out of the house for being gay. Garrard Conleyâs parents sent him to conversion therapy because they believed their son had lost his faith. I know my parents arenât religious, but I donât want to end up in a homo-no-moâ camp. I didnât choose this life. Being gay is who I am.â
âDude, everything will be okay. Do you want to know why?â Matt asks.
âWhy?â I ask him, catching his powerful gaze.
Patting my shoulder, he responds, âBecause Cydney and I will be there when you tell them.â
Iâm stunned. âGuys, are you sure you want to be there? What if it all goes wrong?â
âThatâs exactly why we will be there. For emotional support. If it doesnât go well, which I believe it will, Matti and I will be there for you. We are the three amigos. We have to stick together.
