Insight Six: Develop the Art of Seeing, Hearing, and Doing

Our challenge is to expectantly watch for God’s activity, listen to His voice and discern His will in the present moment.

Jesus Does What He Sees the Father Doing

Jesus’ earthly ministry was characterized by healings, miracles, deliverances, and the proclamation of truth. Jesus’ actions were a reflection of the heart of the Father for His children. In John 14:9, Jesus said that anyone who had seen Him had seen the Father. In Colossians 1:15, Paul described Jesus as the image of the invisible God. What the Father was doing in heaven, Jesus was doing on earth. The Father’s will in heaven was being made manifest on earth in the words and actions of Jesus. In John 14:10, Jesus stated, “The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.”

Jesus viewed His ministry as that of simply doing what He saw the Father already doing. John 5:19-20 says:

Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does.”

Jesus healed the sick, cleansed the lepers, and raised the dead because it was what He saw the Father doing. If the Father was doing it, the Son was also doing it. If the Father wasn’t doing it, the Son didn’t do it. It was out of their love relationship that the Father showed Jesus all He was doing. Love paved the way for insight into the Father’s activities. Out of His intimate relationship with the Father, Jesus was able to see and hear what the Father was doing. Once He saw and heard, He joined the Father in these activities.

Jesus calls us to do ministry in the same way. In John 14:12, Jesus declared:

I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

With the ascension of Jesus and the coming of the Holy Spirit, we are now entrusted with the ministry of Jesus. Now we are the ones who are to do what we see the Father doing and say what we hear the Father saying. We are to reflect the activities of heaven here on earth. Because the Father loves us and He loves those we encounter, He will show us what He is doing. Our job is to learn to see, hear, and do the Father’s work here on earth.

This concept can seem daunting, especially to those of us whose worldview makes it difficult to believe that we can actually see, hear, and do the works of the Father. The good news is that we can develop the art of seeing, hearing, and doing. It will require lots of trust, and it will involve taking risks.
