I check on Emily, she’s having dinner at Jordan’s house. A slice of me feels sceptical if she’s telling the truth. I expect a tirade of fire when I press her for more details, instead I receive a photo of Em and Jordan playing the Xbox, so I let it go.

After Shy’s arrest, everything else kicked off, more police officers were called in. The FAAC and the Drake Covians clashed in a massive brawl. The local media were there to record every single second of the debauchery.

“I thought what you said up there was amazing,” I say to Frank as we wait in the police station. “You’re really brave to speak up when others have turned their back on you.”

“Thanks, Jules. You don’t have to stay with me.”

“Of course I’m staying,” I say. “How do you write a speech like that?”

The take-out mug shakes in his hand as he takes a delicate sip. “I paraphrased some of the crucial points from my new book.” He sighs under his breath. “Shy shouldn’t’ve come, she’s really sensitive about environmental issues.”

“I think there’s another reason for her actions, Frank. She’s really proud of you, and so am I.” I hope my words offer some kind of comfort. “I didn’t realise until I stayed with you, how hard your job is. You’ve got a lot on your shoulders. I couldn’t do it.”

This time Frank smiles but it only lasts for a short spark until stress and sadness reappear. “I told her to be on her best behaviour but she doesn’t listen to me.”

“You got spat at and pushed around, Frank. It made me angry just watching it. If it wasn’t Shy striking first, I would’ve done the same. Geoff the bastard deserves a broken nose, it won’t make him any prettier.”

A laugh bursts from Frank’s throat. “I know but Ward has more support than I do. The youngsters like him.”

“You’re a lone wolf. You don’t need others to fight your corner. I checked their website. You have to apply and there wasn’t a limit on the age of the members. It’s fucking weird. They even have the gall to ask for donations. Whatever it is, he’s got others to fall back on and continue his work. Remember when he went on Good Morning Britain?”

Frank titters again. “Oh yeah, it was awful, like watching a car explode. He shouted at the hosts, it’s not the right way to conduct yourself when you’re getting a point across. Piers Morgan wiped the floor with him.”

“He made himself look like a right tit, you’re not like that,” I say. “Look at how happy he was when he heard about Ian and Earl. The guy’s a fucking dickhead, and a sick one at that. Who laughs when they hear about people dying? And he’s meant to be standing up for noble purposes!” I stare at Frank, eager to drill some encouragement into my friend. “People do like you. The Sea Life Centre staff were in awe, as if they were meeting David Bowie.
