Frequent changes to the grid will keep the attention of horse and rider.

Variations to cavalletti grids

If you need to change a trot grid, then the last cavalletti should always be changed first. If a pole is to be raised, in other words by rolling a cavalletti over to position the pole higher, then this should always be done initially to the last in the row. Then the second last, and so on until all the cavalletti have been raised. In walk, the height should not change much so as not to affect the natural rhythm in this pace.

By positioning the poles at differing heights (for example, low, low, high, high or low, high, high, low), the attention of horse and rider will be maintained. Exercises such as this should only be ridden though with a more experienced horse, since the demands placed on a horse when going over cavalletti positioned in the highest position are too much for younger horses.
