In 1984, Michael Jordan was a basketball standout from the University of North Carolina. He had dominated in the NCAA, helping the University of Carolina win the national title, and in the 1984 Olympics, leading the team to a gold medal victory. On June 19, 1984, Michael Jordan turned pro when the Chicago Bulls selected him during the National Basketball Association (NBA) draft.

As a pro, the twenty-one-year-old was eager to sign an endorsement deal with Adidas, his favorite basketball shoe company. But Adidas was in a period of transition. The company’s founder, Adi Dassler, had passed away in 1978, and his wife, Käthe, who had become president of Adidas at the time of her husband’s passing, had fallen ill. Käthe died at the end of 1984. Needless to say, Adidas was not focused on doing a deal with Michael Jordan. But Nike was.
