CHAPTER 44

MAGDELENA

The next morning, I wake with one mission, and one mission alone. I must speak to Prince Severin. He must never talk about the night in the brothel, or the kiss we shared.

The council has enough for a report now. Surely, they will believe me capable of carrying out my missions again. After all, I coaxed the prince from the Grand Hall, and I kissed him.

Now, I must repair the damage with him.

He must know I acted heedlessly, caught up in proving myself to the council. Though, he cannot find out that part. And he must promise to never speak of our encounter outside the brothel. Nobody can ever know what happened that night.

I search for him through the palace, checking the library, the gardens, even his private chambers. Dodging servants, guards, and his mother’s watchful gaze is no easy task. Somehow, I still manage it, sticking to the shadows and secret passages I’ve learned over the years.

It takes me until the sun sits high in the sky to finally discover the prince in the stables brushing Fleet.

Sunlight blinks through the cracks in the walls as I step closer, my boots crunching on the hay-strewn floor.

“Hello, Prince Severin.” That’s not exactly how I planned to greet him, but it works.

He stares at me for only a breath before returning to his task.

I lick my bottom lip and force more words past my tongue. “About last night...” I cough to clear my throat and stare down at the wooden railing. “It was heedless of me to kiss you.”

The prince continues brushing the massive stallion. I shift my weight from foot to foot, growing more uneasy with each passing second. Still, he doesn’t speak, nor does he glance up.

“Will you not say something?” I finally ask in frustration.

“What would you have me say?” he asks after several more agonizing moments of silence.

“Tell me what you thought about it.” Inwardly, I groan at my words. They aren’t what I planned.

He finishes brushing the stallion and steps out from the stall, turning to face me fully for the first time. “Do you want me to say I regretted it? Is that why you came here?”

“No, not at all. I want to talk about the kiss and what it meant, as well as what you saw at the Mauve Brothel.”

He gathers a bucket of feed and dumps it into the horse’s trough. “I already told you I wouldn’t speak about what I witnessed.”

“I need more assurance than that.” I cross my arms.

A hint of a smirk pulls at the corner of his mouth. “Like what? A blood oath? Shall I slice my palm and yours just to prove myself trustworthy to you?”

“No.” I shake my head, my hair swishing around my shoulders. “I just need more assurance from you.”

His smirk deepens, carving lines into his handsome face. “Another kiss?”

My skin flushes, and I jerk back, frowning. “Absolutely not!”

His knuckles whiten as he tightens his grip on the wooden bucket before lowering it to the floor with a dull thud.
