Chapter Fourteen

A most unexpected sight greeted Annie as she stepped into the bungalow. Chief Stillwater was sitting on their couch in casual attire, with Le Meow resting on his lap. The incorrigible feline purred loudly and luxuriated under the chief’s expert caresses, his clear eyes staring straight ahead. It took Annie several seconds to realize he was staring at his nemesis, who was sitting opposite him in her favorite armchair.

Jealous? his expression seemed to say to Lily. Immediately, Annie scolded herself for imagining things. Her friend was right; it was time to stop attributing human qualities to Le Meow. He was just a cat.

And yet, his furry countenance could only be described as eloquently smug.

“Chief Stillwater, what a nice surprise,” Annie said, setting the cheesecake down. “Are you here for Lily?”

He frowned at her question. “No, Miss Hart, I am not. Where were you this morning?”

“At the library. Why?”

“I wanted to speak with you.”

“About what?”

“The police department received an anonymous call early this morning. Apparently, the caller sounded quite frantic on the phone.” Mild concern settled over his features. “One of my officers tried to calm her down and get more information, but she abruptly hung up at the mention of Scholarly Help.”

“You think she’s a member of the scammy network?”

“I do, and I was hoping you might know who she is.”

Annie shook her head. “I’m afraid I don’t.” She paused, noticing the empty-looking coffee table. “Lily, did you offer the chief a beverage? Coffee, tea, or even a glass of –”

He raised a hand to stop her. “She offered, but I refused.”

“Why?”

Chief Stillwater’s mouth twitched. “Because she offered me sex on the beach instead.”

Shocked, Annie almost lost her grip on her keys. “She what?”

“To make up for that terrible evening when I accidentally rammed my stiletto heel into his foot,” Lily added helpfully.

“Wait.” Annie shook her head. “I don’t understand. You mean my friend propositioned you? And you haven’t arrested her yet?”

Lily’s brown eyes narrowed in suspicion. “What are you talking about?”

“Um . . .” Annie floundered, wondering if she’d been too hasty in her conclusions. “I’m not sure. W-What are you talking about?” she finished lamely.

“I offered him a Sex on the Beach cocktail, minus the vodka because we don’t have it.” Lily eagerly leaned forward to open the cake box. “I was making one for myself when the chief dropped by, so I offered to make another glass for him. He said maybe next time.”

“Oh.” Annie stood there, embarrassed. “Well, perhaps you’d like a piece of red velvet cheesecake, then? And some coffee?”

Chief Stillwater nodded, gently scratching Le Meow under his furry chin. “Don’t mind if I do.”

As Annie picked up the cheesecake and hurried toward the kitchen, she overheard Lily asking, “You like cats, do you?”

“Very much so. I’m definitely a cat person, Miss Lily.”

“I’m quite partial to Chihuahuas.”

“I can’t stand them.”

“Why’s that?”

“Because my ex-wife used to own one. Still does, actually. Her name’s Vendetta.”

“What a weird name. Then again, some genius decided to name this one Le Meow and his girlfriend La Chow, so I can’t really complain.
