POLISHING

As was stated at the outset, French polishing consists of three separate operations, known as (1) Bodying-in, (2) Building-up, and (3) Spiriting-out. Each of these must be performed in a room that is moderately warm, that is not damp, and where there is as little dust as possible flying about. If the atmosphere is unduly moist or the room excessively cold, it will be difficult to bring the surfaces of the wood to a proper condition: they will be smeary and dull. While if dust particles are present in excess, the rubbers will become gritty and scratch the polish. We point out two simple sources of trouble, a kettle of boiling water letting off steam, and someone poking a fire burning powdery coal. Either of these is enough to prevent the most expert polisher from turning out anything but third rate work.

It need hardly be said that an article cannot be dealt with properly if the polisher has to go round knobs, avoid brass handles, or miss out other hazards. Clear, open sweeps are needed. Therefore all such fittings should be removed temporarily from the article to be polished, so that a free run is possible.
