D amon had told everyone that he was going on patrol, but he lied. Technically, he was hunting for the last man who had tried to take Dani. The man who had injured Erik and gotten away.
He was hunting, with every intention of killing the man who had tried to take away two of the people that Damon cared about more than anything in the world.
Damon shifted, right in front of everyone else, and he did it with a smile on his face and a wave. He'd be back, with the man's blood on his hands. Either that, or a plan on how to get to him.
Damon watched for days, as Erik's back healed the burns, but the scar would be there forever. He watched as Cass had to fight to return to the man he was, after taking a life for their family. Damon watched it all, silent, and he waited for his own chance to get revenge .
His wings helped him glide through the air above Gilcurry, and even through the eyes of a dragon, Damon recognized the beauty. Sure, it was covered in trees and lacked the scent of ash or sulfur, but it was still beautiful—still home. He'd be happy there, with his family, forever. They just had to make it safe.
With every flap of his wings, Damon put more of Gilcurry behind him, and he flew toward the edge of Gilcurry. The scent was still there, the smell of the man he was hunting. Damon didn't think twice about flying over the line into the human realm. Immediately, he flew as high as he could, taking cover in the clouds that hung in the sky.
He flew for another few minutes, getting bored of being in the clouds, when he caught the scent again. Stronger this time, enough that it gave Damon a direction to head in.
Like those cartoons that showed an animal being led by its nose, Damon followed the trail. He flew faster and harder than he'd done in a year, while he tried his best to stay concealed. It was a rainy day, so he wasn't concerned with the mortals looking up. Nobody liked to have rain pelt them in the face, at least not in Damon's experience.
He flew to the industrial part of town, where large warehouses sat, mostly unoccupied. The scent was the strongest here, high up in the sky. Damon felt him, saw him, clear as day—due to his scent. The rage that filtered through his brain was almost enough to make him fly down immediately. Almost. He was smarter than that, though. This was the same man who had gotten away from Erik, and Damon knew he'd need a plan.
Instead of doing what he really wanted to, Damon turned around and flew back to Gilcurry. On the way, he planned.
Once he was on the ground, fully clothed, and ready to go, Damon had one stop to make. He drove to Maddox's office on his way out of Gilcurry and walked in without knocking.
