Chapter 8

At dinner, Tayo was the last to take his seat, and the only one left was the one beside Kayla. Apparently, everyone at the table assumed he and Kayla would always want to sit together. He shook his head in wonder at how quickly the others had identified them as together.

And how quickly he’d identified Kayla as his.

When he’d pretended to be her boyfriend in front of Dillon the fuel truck driver, it hadn’t been much of an act. He’d been angry that the other man had been putting the move on Kayla. Jealous angry if he was completely honest with himself.

Though she sat beside him, she didn’t say much, seeming to be in her own little world, barely participating in the conversation around her. Occasionally, he caught her staring at Gunny, and Gunny was staring back.

He wondered what that was all about. RJ had said something about Gunny showing her how to groom a horse. Perhaps they’d bonded over horses while she’d been in the barn.

That day, Tayo had taken the opportunity to explore the Brotherhood Protectors regional headquarters in the basement of the lodge.

Jake had given him the tour, showing him what technology was available to the team as well the armory containing every kind of weapon they might need to equip their own army. They even had C-4 plastic explosives like the military used. Tayo wondered how they’d appropriated that and where they’d use it.

Jake had laughed. “Don’t worry. We’re not anarchists. We just recognize that some of our assignments might take us into dangerous places where we might have to blast our way in. Think drug lord compounds in Mexico.”

The setup was impressive.

“One thing you might consider when performing personal security missions is tagging your client with a GPS tracking device. Especially if he or she is being stalked. We’ve had situations where clients have been kidnapped. If they have GPS tags on them, we can find them quicker.” He handed a necklace to Tayo. “Hank had these made up for the ladies. They’re pretty and functional.”

“I’d never guess this was a tracking device,” Tayo said.

Jake grinned. “I gave one to RJ. JoJo wears one and so does Emily.” He grinned and held up his arm, pointing to his watch. “They can keep track of us as well. But most kidnappers would recognize a smartwatch and remove it before they got too far. The necklaces might be overlooked. And if the chain is broken, the pendant is small enough to slip into a shoe or pocket.”

Tayo turned the pendant over in his hand. “Can I keep this?”

Jake nodded. “I’ll sign it out to you.”

As he sat beside Kayla at dinner, he remembered the pendant in his pocket. After the fuel truck driver had acted the fool earlier that day, Tayo had been wondering how best to protect Kayla when he couldn’t always be there. She worked alone in the building. Anyone could come in and take her away. No one would know for hours.

He wondered
