The room went deathly quiet. Like the kind of quiet that comes right before the storm.

All eyes turned to Brock.

“What did you just say?” Isaac’s voice was a shocked whisper.

Brock collected himself and walked away from the table to the window.

Isaac stood on legs that felt like jelly, and followed after him. Surely he hadn’t heard his father correctly.

“Grandad had this… this whatever this is? I’m not the only one?”

Isaac’s mind was spinning. Exploding with all the implications of what he thought he’d just heard. His father continued to ignore his questions.

“Why did I not know this?” Isaac insisted, refusing to let up. He deserved some answers and he wanted the truth. “Why didn’t he ever tell me? How could you have kept this from me? For all these years?”

His voice rose with each question, and Brock finally turned and looked him in the eyes.

“How? Why the hell would I tell you that? I put up with it my whole life, and after my mother died I wanted to get as far away from him and his crazy antics as I could. I moved us from Jonesborough to Nashville to get away from him, but he kept coming around! Driving over four hours one way, trying to see you kids. And then you started up. Spouting off the same crazy shit that he always did. When the job with the Cleveland Indians came up I jumped on it just to finally get the hell away from him!”

Isaac couldn’t believe what he was hearing. It was as if the glass mural of his childhood had fallen to the hard ground and shattered into a thousand tiny pieces, the image it bore suddenly changed forever. He stared at his father in stunned silence, trying to put all the broken pieces back together into a picture he recognized.

“That trip,” Isaac whispered. “That day he showed up. He wasn’t supposed to be there.”

“What are you mumbling about?” Brock said, glowering at him.

Isaac ignored him and looked over at Adam — the one person in the room who would understand at once what he was talking about. The look on his brother’s face told Isaac all he needed to know. There was apparently a whole lot more to that fateful day than Isaac had ever known. Only now wasn’t the time to get the full story. Not in the middle of all this tension, and certainly not among this toxic company.

“Isaac?”

His mother stood just a few feet away looking scared and worried. Surely she had to have known about his grandfather too, but she’d chosen to keep his father’s secrets. Even though knowing the truth could have possibly saved him a world of pain and loneliness.

“Everyone, let’s just sit and finish our dinner, okay,” Audrey said, gesturing for him to take his seat again.

“I’m sorry, Mama, I can’t. I need to get out of here.”

There was no way he was going to stay here and force down food now that this bombshell had just detonated in his lap.
