Not that the Bar Harbor Times lacked drama. The Times was the Ellsworth American’s chief competitor and it vigilantly kept track of the ever-growing numbers of people visiting the national park and the island. Its editorials tended to fear the worst. This week’s offering, entitled “The Limit,” began with a warning:

Acadia National Park is in danger of being overrun. And it is not just the millions of private visitors who come each year who are guilty of loving the park to death.

The editorial went on to say that all sorts of commercial enterprises were multiplying to sell bicycle tours, bus tours, glider rides, sightseeing flights, mountain-climbing lessons, kayak instruction, whale watching and bird watching. Meanwhile tourist cars were overflowing parking lots, spilling on to roadsides all over the park. Reckless mountain bikers were turning carriage roads into danger zones. It concluded:
