CHAPTER FIFTEEN
âYou did good back there,â said Frank. He gently set her on the sofa, covering her with a blanket, then went to the kitchen to make her a cup of tea. On the counter were lemon squares, making him smile. His grandmother had dropped by, leaving one of Laneâs favorites. He placed a square on the plate and then set the tea and dessert next to her.
âSleepy?â he asked.
âSort of, more drained, I guess. Of all the things to remember, I didnât think the attack would be at the forefront,â she said, sipping her tea. âIt was like I closed my eyes, and they were coming at me again.â
âViolence is hard to forget,â said Frank, sitting on the huge trunk that served as his coffee table. âI had a lot of great times with my teammates in the Rangers, but itâs tough to remember the great times when the bad times seem so vivid.â
âI never got to tell you how proud I was of you, Frank. I know you said that you felt the Rangers were an obvious career path for you, but you were made to be there. You were always big and quiet, the ultimate protector.â
âThank you, Lane,â he said, nodding. âSo, when you left here ten years ago, did you find yourself?â
âI donât know,â she laughed, shaking her head. âI think I did. I mean, if I were trying to find out why those men were doing what they were doing, it feels like I was finding myself. Iâve been a disappointment to my parents for years.â
âWhat would make you think that?â said Olivia, coming from the bedroom. âSorry for entering your home without asking, Frank, but I wanted to help out. I washed the sheets and made the bed. Iâve also brought over some more clothing for Lane.â She sat next to her daughter on the sofa.
âNow, what on earth would make you think we were disappointed in you?â
âMom, come on, I was the flighty airhead that bounced from college to college. Dom was the smart one. He joined the military, got his degree. He was the one that made Dadâs chest puff out, not me.â Olivia stared at her daughter in disbelief.
âI canât believe you thought that,â she whispered. âIâm sorry, Lane. Iâm so sorry. We should have tried harder to let you know that we love you and are proud of you, no matter what. Not everyone is made for the military or college, Lane. Your father and I had very different paths.â
âI know, Mom, but youâre both very successful. So is Dom.â
âYes, but that doesnât mean that you had to find your path in the same way or timeframe as we found ours. You have to do you, Lane. If thatâs saving the whales, well, then save the whales. If itâs working as a barista, well, then work as a barista. If you want to fight protestorsâ¦â
âHold up,â said Frank, grinning. Olivia laughed at the young man, nodding her head.
âRight, if you want to fight protestors, take a few of the boys with you.
