Bouchard argues that literature and the arts more generally constitute a purposeful reflection of the French national impulse in America. An imperial and culturally superior French shadow continues to haunt Franco-Americans and inspire them to create. Bouchard writes elsewhere that “la société québécoise, elle, s’est longtemps perçue et constituée comme une vieille société, s’installant et se représentant dans des visions et des projets de conservation et de survivance.”64 Franco-Americans in the United States may have had no such French existential struggles or concerns propelling forward their French cultural agendas. If New World French cultures in fact emerge out of a sense of inferiority and yet a desire to equal if not surpass la mère-patrie, then they are not mere reflections. They are profoundly Franco-American designs, products of cultural transformation.
