CHAPTER 22

When Andy was brought back to the interview room, Becker and Shultz were already seated. The officer attached to him removed the restraint from his wrist and secured him to the metal ring on the table. On the table in front of him was a black coffee in a plastic red mug. Becker and Shultz had nearly finished theirs. After Becker’s comments, Andy wasn’t keen on drinking the coffee in case Shultz had added a little extra to it. Andy leaned back from the table.

“Not thirsty?” Becker asked as he pointed towards the coffee.

“No. The leg stretch was all I needed, thanks.”

Becker continued, “I think we’ve made some good progress. To confirm, the last time you said you saw Meyer was in the park by the lake. After you said goodbye, she told you she was heading to a meeting at the Fraunhofer Institute and you walked to the railway station to catch the express train back to Berlin.”

“Yes, that’s correct.”

“Before we close this off and wait for the forensic results from the lab, is there anything which you missed out?” Becker pursed his lips, “Did anything happen which you thought was unusual?”

Andy slowly rubbed his stubbled chin while he reflected on what he’d told them. He’d been factual about his movements and his conversations with Meyer. But a thought at the back of his mind bothered him. The thought became clearer.

“I thought I saw Hans Wolf.”

“Where?” Shultz asked.

“I thought I saw him when we were in Café Milan. He was walking by.”

“And you just sat there?” Shultz pressed.

“No. I was surprised at seeing him. I thought you had him in custody. I got up and rushed to see if it was him. Before I reached the door, I collided with a woman. I knocked her to the floor. By the time the commotion died down, Wolf had gone.”

“Anything else?” Shultz asked.

“Yes. I saw Wolf again in the park, near the lake and water gardens.”

Becker produced a map of Dresden from his pocket.

“Show me where you saw him and where you last saw Meyer?” Andy quickly scanned the map to get his bearings.

“Here is the café. We walked this route,” he said as he used his index finger to trace where they’d been. “I saw him again here,” Andy prodded the map, “and this is where I said goodbye to Meyer and returned to the railway station.” He pointed to the spot out on the map. The two officers shared a knowing look.

“Okay. What’s going on? What can you tell me?” Shultz leaned back in his chair, his dead eyes locked on Andy’s.

“Hanna Meyer was found in the lake.” Becker used the map to point to a spot on the water’s edge nearest to the place where Andy had said he had parted company with Meyer. Shultz continued. “The autopsy report said she’d been drowned there. There were signs she’d been in a struggle and overpowered.”

“You’ve admitted to being with the victim at a location close to where her body was found.
