Chapter 7

During dinner that night, Elsa and Gustavo had a long conversation about their favorite books and authors. Elsa told him about having her most coveted literary works sent to her. Her mother had sent one small box of books by post when Elsa explained that there was virtually no other entertainment. She reveled in Woolf, Lawrence, and García Márquez: prose that she could read over and over without tiring, savoring each line while pondering every passage. So later that night, as she and Gustavo sat on the front porch, she opened Women in Love and read a passage out loud to him.

After she read, they looked up at the stars together. She felt Gusatvo’s arm reach around her and his hand caress her back. She turned to him, and he leaned toward her and they kissed. She had prepared herself for this, but it felt so much better than she even expected. It was gentle at first. There was just a brief moment of awkwardness, as she adjusted to the feel of him, the contour and fullness of his lips. They took their time to know each other, to fall into synchronicity, until finally, she led him by the hand upstairs. She did this without thinking, without analyzing what would happen afterward. Elsa felt sure, after waiting for so long to take the chance. She trusted him.

Charles had a soft, hefty body that had always reminded Elsa of a gentle bear. Now she adjusted to Gustavo’s lean, tight body. Elsa felt self-conscious at first. Gustavo slid off her blouse, and she undid her bra. His hands pulled up her skirt and cupped her, while he kissed her neck, her jaw, her chin and then deep on her mouth.

As Elsa fell onto the bed, Gustavo’s hands ran along the length of Elsa’s body and he looked dreamy-eyed and intoxicated. Perhaps sensing her hesitation, Gustavo whispered to her, “Your curves are so delicious. I could eat you up.” Then he licked and nibbled at her soft hips, at her belly and then at her breasts. He took a nipple into his mouth, and Elsa moaned.

It had been so long since she had made love, she was almost frightened by the intense sensation. The pleasure was painful, a deep and aching pain that throbbed throughout her entire body, from her toes to her head. She thought for an instant about falling too deep into the bliss, about losing herself completely and going mad, while hot tears ran from her eyes. When they came together, Elsa felt like they were up in the Milky Way together, flying through the universe, bodiless, weightless, fearless, and totally at one.

Afterward they lay together, entwined and spent, as Gustavo traced the line of her torso with his fingertip. He said, “You are a beautiful woman, Elsa. So beautiful, I can hardly breathe.”

“You don’t know how much I needed this. Thank you,” she replied softly. He leaned over her and kissed her forehead, her eyelids, her lips, but gently like a tiny bird.
