CHAPTER 27

“Let me go, Jason!” Raina demanded.

He clutched the black duffel bag in one hand, and squeezed her arm with the other. The moonlight angled through the treetops, casting odd shadows on the pair as Jason dragged Raina through the woods and behind the farm, with her kicking and squirming.

“Adam’s going to be pissed,” he said through gritted teeth.

“Why’s he going to be mad? We did what he told us to do!”

“Shut up! I’ll talk to Adam. All you need to do is be quiet.”

Jason pounded on the cabin door, first with a quick thump, then several small thuds, followed by a door-jarring slam with a tight, clenched fist. A radio, which had been blaring beyond the door, was switched off.

A bald, medium-sized man in his mid-fifties opened the door. He looked haggard as he nodded at them and smiled. As he stepped aside, his sloped shoulders and shapeless arms resembled those of a once strong, brutish man who had lost his strength and physique at some point in midlife.

“Adam, this is Raina. Raina, Adam.”

Raina seemed to shrink into the wall after the introduction. Adam looked at her, his eyes filled with lust. “Yes, the girl who shot Jensen.”

Raina panicked. “I...didn’t—”

“Here’s the money,” Jason said curtly, tossing the bag onto the wooden table. “The rest of the desomorphine should be on its way to Charlotte as we speak.”

Adam tore into the pouch, greedily pulling out handfuls of cash.

“I didn’t count the money,” Jason said.

“Don’t need to,” Adam answered authoritatively, his eyes growing wider and wider as he stacked the money on the table. “The buyers in Charlotte want this stuff, and I told them no bullshit, or I’d cut them off and kill ‘em.”

Jason moved aside as Adam ambled over to Raina and pressed himself against her. Mortified, she collapsed into the wall. “She’s a pretty one,” he hissed, stroking her cheek with a dirty finger, smearing a swath of white makeup.

Raina squealed under a frightened breath.

A mean grin crossed Adam’s full lips as his knee spread her legs apart.

Her body quivered and her voice shook in terror, as Raina mumbled “No,” repeatedly between the brutal, grinding thrusts of Adam’s hard, angry body against her own.

“Maybe I ought to give it to you right here, huh?”

“No! Please! I’m sorry. No!” she screamed.

Adam froze for a moment and then stepped back, gazing at Raina with complete disdain. Who was she to rebuff him? His hand came down hard and loud against her cheek, knocking her to the floor. Raina clutched her cheek and cried, the sobbing becoming louder with each labored breath.

“Stupid bitch nearly ruined the operation,” Adam huffed.

Jason shrugged.

Raina’s eyes quickly set upon Jason, but he turned away and shrugged again.

“She’s good with a gun. I’ll give her that. I told her to follow that jerkwad and get rid of him if the cops got too close. She did what she was told,” Jason said, sounding almost proud.

“Is that so?” Adam crouched down in front of Raina again. She tucked her legs in and lowered her head in response, afraid of another vicious hit.
