Chapter Thirteen

CARTER WATCHED FROM a spot by the rail while Amy did her thing in the arena. Pride swelled his chest as he tried in vain not to grin like the village idiot.

Damn, she was good. Really good. She seemed nervous at first, which made perfect sense, but once she loosened up, she interacted with Courtney in a way that established her authority without behaving like a tyrant. Tactfully, she pointed out weaknesses, like the way Courtney tensed in the saddle right before a jump, and offered advice to correct each behavior.

“Great job, Courtney,” Amy called out after the teen guided Mingo over the course one final time. The girl appeared tired and the gelding’s dappled coat was soaked with sweat. “Cool him down, then take him in for a wash.”

“Yes, Miss Amy.” With a nudge of her heels, Courtney steered Mingo out of the arena and toward one of the trails.

Carter glanced over at Theresa, who sat on the bleachers a few feet away. Until a few moments ago, the woman had been recording the lesson with her phone. “Courtney looked good out there,” he said.

“Yes, she did. Amy worked well with her.” The woman’s head cocked a little to one side as though she were contemplating something. “I have the strangest feeling, like I’ve seen her before, but I can’t quite figure out where.”

As Amy walked toward the bleachers, she pulled off her sunglasses and hooked them on the collar of her shirt. She gave Theresa a nod of acknowledgment before shifting her attention to Carter. “Have you heard any news?”

“They’re waiting for test results. The doctor thinks it’s her appendix. If it is, it’ll have to come out.”

Sympathy washed over her features. “Oh, no. How long would she be in the hospital?”

“No idea.” For Kayla’s sake, he hoped it wasn’t long. After enduring so many operations in the past, his sister had developed an aversion to hospitals. Not that he blamed her. Being hospitalized for over a month in Germany had the same effect on him.

“Oh, the poor dear.” Theresa’s fingers fiddled with that gaudy green necklace once again. “If she’s still in the hospital by Wednesday, I assume you’ll continue with Courtney’s lessons?” She didn’t look thrilled, but at least she seemed to be open to the idea, which was progress.

Amy nodded. “I’ll do everything I can to make sure Courtney’s ready for her next event.”

The promise appeared to mollify the other woman. She stared at Amy for a long moment, a puzzled look on her face. “I’ve been meaning to ask if we’ve met before. You seem so familiar to me.”

“No, not that I’m aware of.” A flicker of something clouded Amy’s eyes. Discomfort or fear, he couldn’t say for sure, but then she blinked and it was gone. She unhooked the sunglasses from the collar of her shirt and slid them back over her eyes. “I’ve been working on the farm for a while, though, so you’ve probably seen me around.”

“Yes, I suppose that’s it.
