Claire had to jog to keep up with the beast. His strides were just too long, but as she watched from behind, she realized how majestic he was. It was like watching a dinosaur in real life, a talking one. She still didn't understand that part yet, but she hoped to find out on their flight.
Her group hadn't made it deep into the tunnels yet. They'd only just passed the first bend when they first saw Falkor. Jack screamed, and the dragon stopped walking.
Marissa shouted, "Claire!" None of them could see her behind the massive winged serpent.
Claire ran beneath the dragon's belly and between his legs, stopping just in front of him. Frank's hands were fists, and despite Jack's scream, he'd stepped in front of Marissa. "Guys, guys! It's okay. He's going to help us."
"Move, lass," Frank commanded. "Get out of the way, and then run as if your life depended on it. I'll try to hold the beast back."
Claire felt hot breath exit from Falkor’s mouth, and she looked up at him. "No. Please. He just wants to protect me. Give me a minute here before you roast them."
Falkor dipped his head to look at her, then gave the slightest of nods. Claire turned back to her friends. "Frank, listen to me very carefully. This dragon's name is Falkor. He's a boy, and he's young. I don't know the equivalent for humans or leprechauns, but he's young. There are no other dragons in this whole mountain, Frank. He's the last one. I don't have time to explain right now, but he's going to help us get to where we're going. Also, I think the disappearance of his family might be connected to everything that's happening."
She took a step forward and focused on Jack and Marissa. "It's okay, you two. Look at me, I haven't been harmed. What we're going to do, in a very friendly and orderly fashion, is climb on Falkor's back, and he's going to take us to see Prometheus." She looked at all three. "Does everyone understand that?"
Frank was still staring at the beast as he spoke. "Just how did you come to understand all that information, lass? They leave a written record back there about the family history?"
The dragon's rough, loud voice filled the tunnel. "I told her, you nitwit."
Frank's hands fell open, as did his mouth. "Zeus help me, it talks."
Jack began stuttering. "Whu-whu-what did it just say?"
Claire smiled. "Falkor here can talk, and very well. I don't know if he's speaking English or we're speaking whatever language dragons speak, but somehow it works. Now, can we save the catching up for when we're in the air?"
Marissa was the only one who didn't look shocked. She was staring at the dragon without fear, only wonder. "Folklore from the west says dragons don't talk, but in the east, many myths say dragons are the ones who taught humans to speak." She walked forward, appearing unafraid. She moved past Claire to the dragon's massive foot and placed a gentle hand on his leg.
