Chapter Ten

While playing his guitar, Jim listened to Caitlin sing one of the band’s hits. Every note was perfect. Her voice was smooth as silk, her range unbelievable. But it was her tone that captivated him completely. He was shocked she wasn’t a professional singer. She definitely had the talent to be one.

“And that’s why I can never say good-bye.” Caitlin sang the last line, holding the high note for an astonishing amount of time.

The band’s audience—Tad, Phoebe, Jason, and Lucas—jumped to their feet, applauding. Mitchell, Kaylyn, Godric, Hank, and him began clapping their hands, too.

“That was incredible, Caitlin.” Kaylyn put her arm around her. “I had no idea you could sing like that.”

“Thank you, but I can’t hold a candle to you.”

Kaylyn shook her head. “Oh yes you can.” She turned to Mitchell. “Did you hear how she did that run on the last verse? I got goose bumps all over.”

“It was great,” he said.

“I never thought about doing that before but I sure will from now on.” Kaylyn turned back to Caitlin, who was smiling broadly. “You’re a natural.”

“You really think so?”

“Yes, I do. We all do. Right, guys?”

“Yes, we do.” Hank hadn’t taken his eyes off of Caitlin for the entire rehearsal.

“That’s for sure,” Mitchell added.

Godric nodded. “You have real talent.”

“She sure does.” Jim loved how happy Caitlin seemed to be.

“Have you ever thought about making a demo?” Mitchell asked her. “I could produce it here for you. I have no doubt our agent would be thrilled to promote you. Plus, I’m sure the entire band would love to help.”

“Oh my God, what a great idea,” Kaylyn said. “What do you say?”

“I appreciate the offer so much, but I have plans to move to New York for a new job. I’m only in town for the Fourth of July celebration. I’m leaving Monday.”

Kaylyn’s frown mirrored everyone else’s demeanor in the room. “What a shame. I was hoping you would be moving back to Destiny to work with Sam. Then I would get the pleasure of singing with you. Do me one favor, Caitlin?”

“Sure. Anything.”

“Sing with the band at the Fourth of July celebration. I am sure your family and neighbors would enjoy seeing you on stage.”

“I would love that.” Caitlin’s smile was something he would never tire of seeing. He and Hank would have to do something to keep her here in Destiny. But what?

“I’ve got a great idea.” Godric placed his bass guitar on the stand and moved next to Tad. “Why don’t we all have dinner tonight to discuss what songs Caitlin will sing with us?”

Jim grinned, recalling what Godric had told him and Hank by the pool. He and Tad had a plan to get Caitlin to dinner. “Afterward, it will be in your hands how to win her.”

“I can’t make dinner,” Kaylyn told them. “Jaris, Chance, and I are meeting two new clients and their families this evening. We will be introducing them for the first time to their service dogs, Augie and Nell.
