True or False:
If my sister discovers that I’ve borrowed the tiniest amount of her makeup she’ll tell me not to worry.
She’ll say that is what sisters are for and offer to let me have her mint-flavored ChapStick.
If you answered True, then you don’t know my sister.
I hadn’t had so much fun since Sasha’s mom rented a dragon to come to her birthday party. And this time there was no magic.
Katie’s mom came up to her room to bring us a snack. I thought she might be mad because there was makeup everywhere, but she thought we looked great! We went downstairs and pretended their hallway was a catwalk. Katie’s mom, Ms. Hillegonds, got out the camera and kept yelling out, “Darling! You look fabulous!” In all the pictures we’re laughing. It was the most fun ever. Ms. Hillegonds printed out one of the pictures for me to take home.
I heard a noise as I was rounding the corner to my house.
I stopped and looked around. Winston’s nose was sticking through a bush.
“Winston?” I bent down to see him.
“We’ve got a problem.”
“Why are you hiding in the bushes?”
“It’s not my fault.”
“What’s not your fault?”
“There you are.” I turned around and Lucinda was marching down the sidewalk toward me. Uh-oh. She had already seen me or I would have hidden in the bushes too.
“You are in big trouble,” Lucinda said. She sounded pretty happy about the idea.
“What did I do?”
“You know.”
“Is this about your makeup?”
“What about my makeup?” Her face scrunched up like she was chewing on lemons. “You’re not supposed to touch my stuff. I was talking about the dog in the garage.”
“Dog?” I tried to act innocent.
“Someone has been sneaking it food. I found a half-eaten tuna fish sandwich.”
“I’m not really fond of tuna fish,” Winston whispered from the bush. “Bologna’s nice. Chicken salad. Cheese is good too.”
“When Mom and Dad find out you’ve been keeping a dog, you’re going to be grounded forever.” Lucinda grabbed my backpack. “I’m going to tell them about my makeup, too. Is it in here?” She started fishing around in my bag.
“Give that back!”
Lucinda held the bag out of my reach. She dug through and took out the photo of Katie and me. She stared at it. I tried to grab it out of her hands, but all it did was tear the corner off. The picture was starting to look crumpled.
“Who is that?”
“Nobody.”
“Have you been hanging out with a Humdrum?” Lucinda sounded shocked. She squinted at the picture. “What’s wrong with her?”
“Her name is Katie and nothing is wrong with her. She’s wearing zombie makeup.”
“We’re not supposed to hang out with Humdrums. You know that.”
“There’s nothing wrong with being friends with a Humdrum.”
“Nothing wrong? There are only, like, a zillion things wrong. Do you know how many rules you’ve broken? I can think of three at least.”
“I didn’t tell her I was a fairy.”
“You are barely a fairy. You still don’t have your power.”
“Magic isn’t everything,” I shot back.
Lucinda whirled around and started walking toward home.
