CHAPTER 12

MOLLY

The restaurant Mason had chosen was overly romantic, in Molly’s opinion. She thought as much the second she walked up to it and saw outdoor tables under string lights and flickering candles on white tablecloths. Just what did he think he was getting out of this dinner?

“No strings attached, indeed,” Molly muttered, rolling her eyes. Well, he was going to get a lot more than he bargained for, wasn’t he?

In the cab home, he had handed her a slip of paper with an address on it, so they could go to their respective rooms to change and meet there. Why he had this restaurant already in mind was something Molly preferred not to think about. Either he planned on dating around while he was here, or he had spent the entire training session on his phone, researching places to eat. She honestly didn’t know which option was worse—jealousy or disappointment—so she chose neither.

She wove her way around other patrons and found him sitting alone at a table for two. Silently, she thanked herself for remembering to bring a little black dress just in case. “Never go anywhere without one,” her mother had told her. And she’d been right.

Mason was out of uniform and dressed extremely well. He wore a pressed shirt and pants, and he stood to pull her seat out for her when she walked up to the table. “Looks like someone went and taught you old-fashioned manners,” she said.

He laughed and sat down across from her. “The military will change your perspective on formality in a hurry. You learn to appreciate it. There’s a silent communication about it, isn’t there? It’s a way to tell people who you are and what they mean to you without saying a word.”

“And what was that you were trying to communicate to me just now?” she asked.

He placed his napkin on his lap, and then, just to remind her he was still Mason, propped his head on his fist, elbow firmly planted on the table. “I meant to say, I had a lot of learning and growing up to do, but I’ve done so much of it. I believe I’m a better person now, and you… you are more important to me than ever. I’m a better person because of you.”

Molly scoffed. “How is that even possible? I haven’t been in your life for the last eight years. Not even a text, Mason.” Now the hurt crept into her voice, despite the fact that she had told herself to keep a tight lid on it. “I mean, look at you. You’re in the military? And you’re learning aeronautical engineering, apparently. None of these things were worth sharing with me?”

The server came to bring water and menus. He asked whether they would like a drink, and Mason ordered wine. Molly just said, “I’ll have what he’s having.” Wine sounded lovely, anyway, and she would be damned if she knew the right wine to order at a place like this.

After the server left
