Chapter Ten

Henri watched his wolf run off with the others, watched their breath in the icy cold, the plumes of their tails.

Beautiful.

Stop it. Stop staring like an idiot child.

“Shh. He’ll be back in the morning, and you’ll be quiet again. I’m not worried.”

Henri was maybe a little worried.

The Others had started talking almost as soon as Mal had shifted to wolf form and sprinted into the woods.

It felt like being poked, again and again, like tiny bug bites. Little mosquitoes in his brain, sucking him dry. Henri put his hands to his head, trying to squeeze them out.

Paul came to him, expression concerned. “Are you well, brother?”

“Fine.” Because otherwise they might take Mal from him.

Those dark-brown eyes saw too much, and Paul shook his head. “I know better. You’re safe here, brother. I can help until your wolf returns.”

“They bite me. They want me to hurt.”

“I know. I can tell.” Paul took him by the upper arms, rubbing gently.

“Do you think it’s just me? Only me?”

“I think they’re part of how you were made into a vampire, Henri. So no, I think others hear them, too.”

He wasn’t sure if that was a comfort or a sorrow. Either way, Henri felt glad that Paul understood, that Paul did not want to simply lock him up or stake him.

It’s only a matter of time. You’re defective. A child. A lunatic.

His muscles tensed one by one, his body shaking.

“Shh.” Paul pulled him into an embrace, surprisingly warm. The strength eased him, but it embarrassed him, too. “No, brother. Don’t feel bad. There’s a reason you came to my land. I know it.”

Henri wanted to believe that, needed to trust that he was somewhere he belonged.

Don’t be ridiculous. You’ve never belonged. Never.

Paul stroked his hair, reminding him of how fascinated Mal seemed with it.

“Have you been here very long, frère?”

“I have.” Paul smiled, moving to pull him down in a chair so they curled together. “Since there was no one here but a few miners, I brought the pack members with me who wanted to come.”

“I was in the Crescent city. I had an old home, a plantation house once upon a time.” He’d spent hours watching the people, the spicy ones.

“Oh, it must be so cold for you here.”

“The snow is amazing.” And Mal kept him warm.

“It is. I love the quiet. The whiteness.”

The voices began to mutter, softly at first, just a little constant whisper that was more an irritant than anything.

Paul tried to drown them out, he really did. It helped for a bit.

“I’m going to explore. I can’t… It’s hard, with all the sounds. I like to move.” He had to move.

“Very well. Come on.” Paul lifted him and stood. “What would you like to see?”

Henri could cry, the care and fondness from Paul near overwhelming. “I should have met you centuries ago.”

“Yes. But we will do what we can now, hmm?”

“Yes, mon frère, s’il vous plait.”

“Good. Good. You have your dabi, me. Brant. We help.”

Paul carried him through the halls, moving slowly as if in a dream.
