Chapter 9

Zack

Myra dozes for most of the way back to Kate’s house. She’s still half out of it when we finally pull up, and I use my key, with her draped over my shoulder, to get inside. She smells like puke and knows it, so she asks if I can give her a bath. We’re playing in suds when Kate walks in. Myra’s got all the color back in her face, and she’s kicking my ass in suds wars in the tub. I’m squatting on the floor next to the tub when Kate walks in. “Well, you look a lot better, sweetheart. You feeling better?”

“Uh huh.”

“She smells better, too. I put her dirty clothes right downstairs in the washing machine. There was a load in her room already, so I just added it to the pile.”

“Thanks, Zack.”

“Don’t mention it. You wouldn’t believe what kind of crap I have to clean up after at the ranch. This is nothing.”

“I suppose you would have interesting things to clean up working there.”

“Horse poo?” Myra asks.

Zack snuffles a laugh. “Lots of horse poo. It’s called manure, actually. Just like cow manure.”

“Poop is called manure?”

“That’s right, darlin’.”

Kate pushes the toilet seat down and sits. “Do you like your new booster seat?”

“It’s cushier than the other one.”

“That’s because it’s new.” Kate explains. “Is there anything else you’d like, darlin’? Is there anything else I can get you, to make your stay at Casa Kate more enjoyable?” she says dramatically, making Myra giggle.

Myra ignores the question. “I like riding on the horse with Zack.” She states.

“I imagine that was quite fun. I’d like to try that sometime myself.”

“You. Me. Tomorrow.” I say, giving Kate a thumbs up.

“I’d like that.” She smiles. I give her a wink.

Then Myra hits us with a question right out of left field. “Auntie Kate? When is my mama coming home?”

My eyes are on the floor, as I give Kate the opportunity to answer.

“Well, your mama’s awful sick, darlin’. We got her in the hospital, and they’re taking real good care of her.”

“Is daddy coming to get me?”

“Not for a while, sweetheart.” Kate says simply. “He’s real busy with Lecy right now, helping out with her daddy, who’s also real sick. But you can stay with Auntie Kate for as long as you like. How’s that?” she smiles. “You get to go to the ranch every day after school, and Zack here’s going to teach you how to ride when you get just a little bit bigger. We can have lots of fun. How does that sound?”

To our relief, Myra nods, smiling. I give Kate’s hand a squeeze while I douse Myra with another handful of suds. She giggles, and we start having a water fight, until Kate’s bathroom floor is soaked, and we all might as well hop into the tub, because we’re so soaking wet. “Okay, Myra. Let’s get you all dried off and to bed. If you’re feeling up to it, you’ve got to go to school tomorrow.”

“Okay. I want to go to school.
