Chapter Eleven
Revealed
We step out into the dark hallway.
"Are you sure this is okay?" David asks.
"Are you scared?" I ask.
David smiles. "Scared? Yeah, right."
I tell David to wait upstairs while I run down to the kitchen to get a butter knife. When I get back he's sitting on the floor in front of Steve's bedroom. Even though he says he's not scared I can see in his eyes that's he's not quite sure about what we're going to do. I pop the lock and open the door. David gives me a look and stands up. We slowly enter the darkness of Steve's room. I flip the switch next the door. The overhead light comes on. David looks around and sits down on the edge of Steve's bed. I just hope Steve doesnât come home soon.
"His room's pretty cool," he says.
"I know," I tell him. "He's got a lot of cool horror movies."
"As cool as the one we just watched?" David laughs. He's messing with me again. "I mean, you can't get much cooler than Headless."
I don't say anything.
"Are you ignoring me?" David asks.
I turn and look at him. "What's your problem?"
"What?" He acts like he doesn't know what I'm talking about.
"You know what I mean," I tell him. I'm getting very angry. "You've been picking on me all night. Did I do something to you?"
"No," he says. He looks away.
"Are you sure?" I keep looking at him. It's making him nervous.
He takes a breath and looks at me. "Don't you get tired of watching horror movies all the time? Don't you get tired of doing the same thing every time I spend the night? I mean, I like coming over, but we do the exact same thing every time."
This is new to me. "What would you like to do?"
"I dunno," he says. "Something different. Something fun. Something that doesn't have anything to do with horror movies."
David's the only person I know that enjoys horror movies. Now he says he doesn't like watching horror movies all the time. When did this happen? That's what we had in common. That's the thing that made us friends in the first place. That and the comic book. I don't understand at all. I'm confused. Does he not like hanging out with me anymore? Would he rather hang out with his other friends from school? I guess they're cooler than I am. David probably has more fun with them.
"Do you wanna see something scary?" I ask.
David just shakes his head. "Whatever, Marty. Do your worst."
I open the closet door and take out the bowling ball bag. It's heavy. It must have a head inside. I put the bag on the bed next to David. He looks at it and smiles. "A bowling ball bag? Are you kidding me? That's supposed to be scary?"
"It's not the bag," I tell him. "It's what Steve's got inside."
"Like the movie, right? I guess there's a head in there." David shakes his head again. I guess he thinks Iâm messing around.
"Maybe," I say.
