Vivian took Ross’s death better than I did. Whatever I’d managed to convey to her, she didn’t pause. Days later, she broke her tiny arm bouldering. Jumping down, she extended spread-eagle, whacked her elbow and broke her humerus in two places. I watched her do it. She barely cried; it took serious investigation to find out she was really injured. She’s still my baby, but she has the grit. It terrifies me. She got a hot pink cast up to her armpit, and she immediately figured out how to wedge it on the jungle gym at school and deadhang off it.

I sat down at the kitchen table with a notebook and stared into space, thinking about a rack covered in drying, bloody feathers. Sticky. Then I got up again, put on the apron with the tiny cherries, and made a pie. Then I sat down. Then I got up and painted my fingernails black, called the climbing gym, and suspended Vivian’s Little Rockers class until the cast came off.
