Chapter 12

ANNA

Four days later, I receive a text message from Cova informing me that her father has passed away and asking me not to call her for the moment; she will contact me as soon as she can. I guess as much as they knew it could happen any day now, it’s still a hard blow.

It feels strange not to be there to comfort her through these challenging times, but every family is different, and she refused when I proposed the idea. I would like to have her by my side if that happens to me, but I respect her decision.

At work, the whole team is working hard so that Cova can stay more days with her family. Manu has even asked us to send her pictures of us doing the work in costume to cheer her up. It’s silly, but some of them are so nice that I hope they have an effect.

On the sixth day, we received a voice message on Manu’s phone thanking all the workers for the effort and telling us that we had even managed to bring a smile to her mother’s face.

Lying in bed, I’m zapping with the remote control, unable to enjoy any series or movie. My head still thinking about the hard times Covadonga must be going through and how I’d like to be with her to comfort her. It’s no use trying to read either. I can’t manage to concentrate on any book for more than ten minutes, only the time I’m busy at work frees my mind, and not always.

Plopping down on the mattress, I sigh deeply and turn off the lights, ready to touch myself, thinking about her when I get a phone call.

My heart skips several beats when I see Cova’s name on the screen, and, trembling, I open the call wanting to hear her voice.

“Hi! I wasn’t expecting your call,” I exclaim as excited as a little girl.

“I needed to hear you,” Covadonga admits almost in a whisper.

With a jump, I sit up in bed, pressing the phone to my ear as if wanting to be transferred to her house through the line.

“How’s your family doing?” I ask somewhat anxiously.

“My mother is internalizing it little by little, we knew that this day would come, but my sister has me very worried. This morning she took her car and disappeared,” explains Cova with a sigh.

“Your sister’s a case,” I mumble, softening what I really think of her.

I never met her, but that girl looks like a spoiled child to me. I understand that she has made an effort to take care of her father so that Covadonga could keep her professional career. Theoretically, she has given up the life she had to do it. But fuck! She always seems to be messing up. She looks so irresponsible that it’s scary.

“I’m a bit desperate,” admits Covadonga, “these days, we’ve constantly been arguing about a lot of things. I’ll tell you about it calmly, now I just wanted to hear your voice.
