Chapter 8

"What? What are you talking about?" Jenny had found Seth counting the wide-range bane navigators, which was difficult at best due to the fact they needed to be in complete darkness.
"I can't believe you haven't heard this already. I'm glad I'm the one telling you." She tried reaching out and ended up putting a finger in Seth's eye.
"Ouch, Jenny! What the hell are you doing?"
"Can we get out of here please? This is important!"
"Fine! Hang on." Seth grabbed his cart and wheeled it toward where he knew the door to be, bumping into Jenny. "Follow me." They stepped out of the dark space into the entryway of the bane navigator room and Seth closed the door. Then he turned on a light. "Okay. What is this about Marc?"
"The rumor is all over the building. He met up with some woman yesterday. She came here to see him. I guess she was obviously pregnant, too. Exotically beautiful. Both Brittney and Karen say the same thing because they were there. Marc was shocked to see her but hugged her anyway and it was a very long hug. The woman even cried and that's when Marc took her out of the building."
Seth hated rumors, especially a potentially painful one like this one. And he wouldn't believe it until he heard it from Marc himself. However, he wasn't sure when that would be. He had to admit he was a little put off yesterday when he received the text from Marc telling him he wouldn't be able to meet up with him because something had come up. A small red flag shot up in the back of Seth's mind but he ignored it, was even proud of himself for not texting back immediately asking what that "something" was. But when he didn't even hear from Marc later, Seth tried calling him. Marc didn't answer. In fact, it went straight to voice mail. Subsequent calls kept going to voice mail and by Seth's fifth call he was getting worried.
"And Marc isn't at work today. Did you know that?" Jenny put her hands on her ample hips and started tapping her foot. "He called in sick. Sick! He has never done that. This is the first time, that's what Paul from personnel said. First--time. I kid you not."
"So? Maybe he is. You don't know."
"True. He could be. So have you talked to him, then? Heard from him?"
No, Seth had not. Marc's phone was still off. "No," he said dejectedly. But there was another reason, another explanation, not the one Jenny was hanging on. There had to be. "So what are you saying?"
"The rumor is, of course, he knocked up some girl and now she's finally telling him. He was truly upset yesterday and hustled her out of here like she was on fire or something. What else could it be?" Jenny's shoulders slumped. "I'm so sorry, Seth. I tried to warn you though. Tried to tell you."
Instant anger rose like the bile he was suddenly tasting.
