chapter twenty-one

Emberly

Oh, no...

A cold chill trickled down my spine as the golden king’s presence absorbed the attention of the room. I looked down at the sword in my grip and the shattered pride that was scattered beneath it. After all this hard work, I had failed again... What would he do this time?

“It sounds like someone has been doing his research.” The golden king eyed Corso, his sparkling glare dulled on him. “While I’m honored to have been the topic of conversation, I must say I’m disappointed you didn’t come to this realization sooner. Yes, it’s true. The golden sword isn’t just for flair; I need a weapon that can channel my magic.”

He approached me with slow steps that seemed to freeze time around me. I didn’t dare move anymore. My body reacted like it would if it was being approached by a starving wolf, freezing while it inspected me and decided whether to bite. The king eyed my sword, the shiny metal glinting in his sharp eyes.

“F-forgive me, but you never explained the sword’s purpose,” I said with a dry swallow. “Just like before, I did everything I could to build the sword to meet your requests.”

He reached out for the sword, brushing his cold, bony fingers against mine as he took the handle from my grasp. He lifted the sword into the air, sending a thud through my chest as I looked the armed monster in the eye.

“I suppose you did,” he said in a voice that almost sounded like a purr as he traced his finger across the golden edges. The sharpened metal sliced the tip of his finger, and he let the blood dribble down the blade and stain the polished sword. “The gold is certainly strong, but I’m afraid it’s too sharp for me to touch and enchant whenever I please...” He wrapped his grip around the handle, spotting it in his blood. “It’s a shame... I had such high hopes.”

“Please,” I said with a tight breath. “The sword meets the requirements you gave me. I cannot be expected to work with information I don’t have.”

“I can expect whatever I want, my dear,” the king said with a chaotic twitch in his smile. “Besides, we still have yet to prove if the sword meets the requirements I gave you. It’s clear that it can draw blood, but is the gold strong enough to kill?”

He turned to Corso, and my stomach dropped into the depths of the sea. Corso staggered back a step, his eyes wide with warning as he looked between the blade and his captain.

“A demonstration might be in order...” the king said with a wicked smile. He took a daunting step toward Corso, the sword raised with the drop of blood from earlier running down the metal.

“Captain.” Corso put his hands out in defense. “What are you doing?”

He didn’t reply; his movements fixated on Corso as he closed in one heavy step at a time.

“Captain?”

He’s going to kill him... Is this so he
