Chapter Seven

Liam

“Damn it, Shae! I told you not to look!” I yell at her, hoping she’ll come to and put pressure on her hand again. She doesn’t. I drive with my left hand and squeeze the cut lightly with my right. I make a turn to the hospital and follow the emergency signs. In less than ten minutes, we’re parked and I have her in my arms. She’s waking up, but I tell her again to not look at her hand.

“Ugh, I hate blood!” She groans and her head flops back on my shoulder.

“I noticed.” I get her inside the sliding doors. I have to sign her in, so I make her stand next to me, one hand on her waist. The nurse asks why we’re in and I explain. I’m directed to a waiting room with paperwork and a woozy Shae. I get her situated under my arm and fill out all the paperwork, only asking her a few questions, and I leave her long enough to turn it in. Then we wait.

“It’s all your fault.” Shae blinks up at me. Her face and lips are pale. She REALLY hates blood.

“How’s it my fault your hand slipped, gorgeous?” I bounce my knee impatiently, trying to keep cool instead of losing my shit because no one has helped her yet.

“I was staring at your shoulders.” Shae laughs.

“I get that a lot.” It’s the first thing most people notice about me.

“Who else says that? I’ll cut a bitch.” I look down and watch her try not to laugh. “Get it? I cut myself.”

I shake my head. “Yeah, I get it.” Shae rests her head on my arm, I rub her shoulder and try to keep her talking. I cover the bloody towel with my hand and we wait. And wait. Shae is uncomfortable and I can tell she’s in pain, but we keep waiting. I finally get fed up and stand to go yell until someone looks at her hand or at least gives her drugs so she can have some relief. That’s when someone calls her name. We stand, my arm around her waist in case she stupidly decides to look at the blood again.

The nurse puts a wristband on Shae’s arm and sizes me up. “Are you family?” The woman puts her hands on her hips.

“Yes,” Shae answers, and I’m relieved. The nurse nods once and leads us back to a curtained off area. The nurse asks to see the injury and I keep my arm around Shae, making her look at me while the nurse studies the gash. Shae hisses in a breath and the nurse covers it back up. We’re told to sit and wait. I help Shae onto the bed, moving the chair next to her and sitting down. I keep my hand in hers, and we wait.

“They need to give you drugs,” I muse, watching her shift in her seat.

“You look like you need them.” Shae glances at my shaking leg.

“You’re hurting.” I shrug.

“It’s not bad.
