CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Victoria

I stewed all weekend after picking up the girls.

Literally. All. Weekend.

You know it’s bad when your pre-tween comments on your mood. Molly told me I looked uncomfortable, and Blaire straight up avoided me all day Sunday, only coming out of her room for meals.

I barely slept Sunday night as I got more and more furious. I felt disrespected. Self-conscious. So damn angry. After Thomas, I promised myself I wouldn’t let a man stomp all over me, and literally—literally— the next man does exactly that. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice … ugh. I’m mostly mad at Matt, but I’m so incredibly disappointed with myself.

By Monday morning, I’m taut with animosity. My anger is coming off of me in waves of seething heat. My girls are stoically silent, neither one wanting to poke the bear. There’s a very very small voice in the back of my head reminding me I should take a breath and calm down. I work with special needs children. They don’t need, or deserve, my wrath. But, unfortunately, my hormones are running the show. They want to inflict pain. They crave the high that can only come from terrorizing all the men. Screw that guilty feeling afterward. They only focus on the here and now.

If there was ever an opportunity for a musical montage to accompany my walk into school Monday morning, I know it would be the music whenever the Wicked Witch of the West roamed around The Wizard of Oz. I’m walking with purpose, my coat billowing in the wind my body creates behind me. The girls are legitimately running to keep up with me.

“Mowwy, tell Momma to slow down,” Blaire whispers.

“I’m not telling her. You tell her,” Molly responds.

“Momma, I got short legs!” Blaire says a little louder. I stop abruptly, and Molly runs into me.

“Oomph, sorry, Mom,” she whispers. Blaire exhales a breath of relief. Both girls appear out of breath as Molly rests her hands on her thighs and lowers her head. Damn. So involved in my own drama, I didn’t realize how the girls were handling it.

“I’m sorry, girls. Wow. I’m really sorry. I’ll slow down,” I tell them as I reach to rub both of their necks. My arms circle them as we slowly finish the walk to my office. I went the long way around to avoid Matt’s office. I’m unsure if the girls noticed this, but I know they’ll see the bouquet of yellow roses on my desk.

“Are those for you?” Molly asks as she runs to grab the card attached to the bouquet. She rips the card open and then stares at me in disbelief. “Mom! They are for you! Why is Officer Turner sending you flowers?”

“Can I see the card, please?” I ask softly. I want to see what he wrote before I answer.

Victoria,

Thank you for helping me Friday night.

You’re a great friend.

Matt Turner
