Paris

We’d been driving for an hour when Nikolai suddenly stopped the car.

I’d been weeping softly while he drove. Neither of us spoke until now.

“I’m sorry you had to witness that,” he said. I gazed up at him and could see the anguish in his face. His beautiful eyes shone with unshed tears. He reached out his hand and gently brushed away the tears on my cheeks. “Maybe I should give up on you. Hell knows I should have never gotten involved with you in the first place. I was so weak to resist and now…”

He stopped speaking as soon as I placed a finger on his lips.

“Don’t ever say that.” Swallowing the choke in my throat, I said, “What happened tonight was horrible. Was I the only one who thought someone set her up? She didn’t look like a thief who could steal millions from…from people like you guys.”

“It’s a matter for the Volkovs to resolve,” said Nikolai. “Maria was his ward. She was his son, Dimitri’s fiancée.”

I stared at him. “She was engaged to him? And he killed her…just like that?”

“He didn’t have a choice.”

“That guy Andrei loved her more. At least, he spoke for her. Dimitri just went along with his father.”

“Dimitri had no choice,” he repeated.

Anger suffused through the haze of shock. “What would have happened if he refused to kill her?”

“His father’s word would hold little to no value. In our line of work, that’s equal to death.”

“If someone were to set me up, would you do the same? Will you shoot me if your father told you to do so?”

His face went white immediately. Part of me felt ashamed to attack him that way but I still couldn’t get over the fact how that poor girl was murdered.

“I’ll kill myself before letting anything like that happen to you. Dimitri and Andrei are still too young. Too naïve. They couldn’t save the girl they both loved. She grew up with them since she was a baby. The men who stood there watching her get shot by her fiancée played with her when she was a child. We watched her grow up. It wasn’t easy on any of us.”

“Then why do it at all?”

“All the evidence pointed to her.” He ran fingers through his dark strands, looking torn. “We knew this was coming up. I just had no idea it would be done tonight or I would have never agreed to take you to the party tonight. You didn’t have to see any of that.”

“I had to,” I insisted. “I am not as stupid or naïve as you think. Have you forgotten what Brianna and her mother did to my father? To me? Even after knowing I was his child, they planned to murder me. I know that people closest to you can hurt you the most, but that girl who died…” I shook my head, trying to clear the image of her body plunging into the water, the look of pain and regret freezing on her face as her last expression.
