Chapter Twelve

Sabrina

I couldn’t believe we were actually going to Las Vegas. I only wished it was for a reason a little less personal, less serious. I had always wanted to go, and I knew going with Damon was exactly what I would need to lighten my mood. He just had this way about him that always made me feel better, happier. It wasn’t one thing, either, it was everything about him, from his sense of humor to his passion for life, and then especially there was the way he treated me.

When he suggested this trip I wasn’t entirely sure he was serious or even knew what he was getting himself into, but we talked about it at length the other night and most nights since then, so I felt good about it. He even had me pull up the file I got on Patrick Carter and labored over all of it with me. My father sure as shit had a past, but it seemed I was his only child and he bounced around a lot from job to job.

I had a feeling our impromptu meeting wouldn’t exactly be the highlight of his day, maybe even year, but sometimes I had to just put aside what I thought others wanted and worry about what I wanted. This was definitely going to be one of those times. Because when I forgot that, that was when I got myself into trouble, my emotions getting the best of me. And after Damon and I fought the other night, I knew without a doubt I wanted to meet my dad. Cami’s mom was right, it was exactly what I needed for closure and my own personal growth. It felt strange to put so much stock into essentially meeting a stranger, but I wasn’t going to question it, just follow her advice. The support I got from Damon was unwavering and gave me the strength I needed to do this.

So with my last suitcase zipped up, I dropped it by the door and did a final sweep of the place. Damon was due any minute, coming straight over from work to pick me up and drive us to the airport. Our flight wasn’t for another hour, but I still liked to arrive early just in case.

“Bye, house. I’ll be back soon,” I said to the room in general then walked to the patio where I left a small bowl of milk out for Puss. He was a stray, so I had a feeling he’d be just fine without me for a few days, but I still liked to think he was getting the milk he so loved from me at least for the day. “See you soon, Puss,” I announced to the little cat, who looked up at me with eyes full of wonder. I just hoped he knew he was loved.

I heard a car door and knew it was Damon, and a little jolt of excitement ran through me. It was an important trip for me and the fact that he wanted to come with me made it even more important, maybe even better.
