Chapter 18
âEveryone should totally looooosen up!â
âHow much have you had to drink?â Annika whispers in my ear.
âHey!!!â I say, swaying on my stump stool. âYouâre here! Bestiesssss!â I hold out my hand so we can do our fourth grade secret handshake. Annika bats my hand away.
âFraidy, youâre wasted,â she says, her voice low.
âNo, no,â I whisper to her. âI spilt most of it. On porpoise. I mean purpose. But donât tell Jeremy. And anyway, Iâm just having fun. You should try it sometime. You need to loosen up. Everyone should totally looooosen up! WOOHOO!â
âOh my God, Fraidy. You need to sober up before you go home.â
âNo thanks,â I say. I stand and drape my arm around her neck. âYou know whoâs here? Fry Face, Tyler. You two should hook up.â
âJulia,ââ
âHey, TYYYYYLERRR!â I call. âSomeoneâs got a crush on you!â
Annika shrugs herself out from under me, and I stumble into a tree.
âHey!â I say. âThat hurt.â
âStop it, Julia. Youâre being an idiot.â
âNo Iâm not. You like him.â I crank my head around her and shout, âTyler, she like-likes you!â
âShut. Up.â
âHey, what are you doing here?â Jeremy asks, pulling me to his side.
Annika backs away, shaking her head. âI have no idea,â she says.
âShe needs to loosen up,â I say.
âYour mom is going to kill you,â she says.
âPffft. My mom wonât even notice. Sheâs too into her own crap.â Slinging my arm around her shoulder, I sway into her. âPARTAY!â
She staggers for a moment, but regains her balance.
âJulia, we need to go,â Annika says.
âNo way,â I say.
âMind your own business, Annika,â Jeremy says. He wrenches me from Annika and I wrap my arms around his waist, feeling woozy. âIâll take her home.â
âJulia is my business.â
âShe can take care of herself,â Jeremy snaps.
âThatâs obviously not true. Look at her. She canât even stand up.â Her index finger jabs upwards at Jeremy.
âJeremyâs got me, Annika. He loves me, like for real.â
âIf he loved you he wouldnât give you booze.â
âJust back off. She doesnât need you. Iâll take care of her,â Jeremy says, his arms tighten around me, protecting me from the world and Annika.
âYup, yup yup. Iâm all good,â I say.
Annika glares at me. âSo thatâs it? You donât need me anymore, so I can go?â
âYou donât have to leave,â I say, pointing over to the fire pit. âWhy donât you hook up with Tyler?â
âHoly Crap. Iâm outtaâ here,â Annika says, brushing past Jeremy and me. Chloe runs to her, but she only shakes her head and keeps walking. I watch her as she climbs up the path to the soccer pitch. She pauses for a moment at the top of the ridge before disappearing into the night.
âWhy canât she just have fun with me?â
âSheâs a total buzz kill,â Jeremy says, leading me to his cooler. âAre you ready for a second?â
Why not?
