Chapter 18

“Everyone should totally looooosen up!”

“How much have you had to drink?” Annika whispers in my ear.

“Hey!!!” I say, swaying on my stump stool. “You’re here! Bestiesssss!” I hold out my hand so we can do our fourth grade secret handshake. Annika bats my hand away.

“Fraidy, you’re wasted,” she says, her voice low.

“No, no,” I whisper to her. “I spilt most of it. On porpoise. I mean purpose. But don’t tell Jeremy. And anyway, I’m just having fun. You should try it sometime. You need to loosen up. Everyone should totally looooosen up! WOOHOO!”

“Oh my God, Fraidy. You need to sober up before you go home.”

“No thanks,” I say. I stand and drape my arm around her neck. “You know who’s here? Fry Face, Tyler. You two should hook up.”

“Julia,’”

“Hey, TYYYYYLERRR!” I call. “Someone’s got a crush on you!”

Annika shrugs herself out from under me, and I stumble into a tree.

“Hey!” I say. “That hurt.”

“Stop it, Julia. You’re being an idiot.”

“No I’m not. You like him.” I crank my head around her and shout, “Tyler, she like-likes you!”

“Shut. Up.”

“Hey, what are you doing here?” Jeremy asks, pulling me to his side.

Annika backs away, shaking her head. “I have no idea,” she says.

“She needs to loosen up,” I say.

“Your mom is going to kill you,” she says.

“Pffft. My mom won’t even notice. She’s too into her own crap.” Slinging my arm around her shoulder, I sway into her. “PARTAY!”

She staggers for a moment, but regains her balance.

“Julia, we need to go,” Annika says.

“No way,” I say.

“Mind your own business, Annika,” Jeremy says. He wrenches me from Annika and I wrap my arms around his waist, feeling woozy. “I’ll take her home.”

“Julia is my business.”

“She can take care of herself,” Jeremy snaps.

“That’s obviously not true. Look at her. She can’t even stand up.” Her index finger jabs upwards at Jeremy.

“Jeremy’s got me, Annika. He loves me, like for real.”

“If he loved you he wouldn’t give you booze.”

“Just back off. She doesn’t need you. I’ll take care of her,” Jeremy says, his arms tighten around me, protecting me from the world and Annika.

“Yup, yup yup. I’m all good,” I say.

Annika glares at me. “So that’s it? You don’t need me anymore, so I can go?”

“You don’t have to leave,” I say, pointing over to the fire pit. “Why don’t you hook up with Tyler?”

“Holy Crap. I’m outta’ here,” Annika says, brushing past Jeremy and me. Chloe runs to her, but she only shakes her head and keeps walking. I watch her as she climbs up the path to the soccer pitch. She pauses for a moment at the top of the ridge before disappearing into the night.

“Why can’t she just have fun with me?”

“She’s a total buzz kill,” Jeremy says, leading me to his cooler. “Are you ready for a second?”
