Chapter 17
Beckett
Truths
The Adirondack chair splintered under me and the flagstone came rushing at me. I managed to twist my shoulder enough to avoid breaking some bones. Kira would give me enough shit about the chair, I didnât need to spend half the summer in a sling.
A pair of ballet slippers came into view as Helena stood over me with her hands at her hips. âWhat the hell is wrong with you?â
I groaned and gave up trying to get up.
Suddenly, I was lifted off the ground and put on my feet. The world tilted and Kainâs bloodied face came into focus. I flinched, waiting for another hit from his ham hock of a fist. Goddamn, he was a big dude.
âKain, thatâs enough.â Her voice dented the buzz in my ears from the number of times Kain rang my bell.
How the hell did she know Kain? And why the fuck was she talking to him like she knew him biblically?
After sheâd just been in my goddamn bed. Hell, I still had her taste in my mouth, her smell on my skin. My bed was barely cool from us.
The snarl rose up in me, the red haze at the edges of my vision threatening again.
âYou good, son?â
I weaved a little, but I managed to not list to the left even though my ribs were on fire.
âNo, heâs not good.â Helena hovered near me, her hands fluttering as if she wasnât sure to touch me or not.
Because she felt guilty that sheâd just been in Kainâs arms?
Maybe even in his bed?
Even as the unwelcome thought registered, I denied it. No. I refused to believe she couldâve done that after what weâd shared.
Yeah, you sure acted as if you were full of trust, jackass.
âI can answer for myself.â My voice held more of a growl than Iâd intended.
She flinched once before the icy calm I remembered from the wedding descended over her face. âFine, beat yourselves bloody.â
âHaleigha, câmon. Itâs over with. I mean, if he wants to go another round, I will, but I think he got it out of his system.â
âGot it outââ Helena broke off and tugged at the brim of her ball cap before twirling to stalk off only to turn around and come right back. âYouâre both unbelievable.â
Kain licked the corner of his mouth. At least his lip was busted from one of my fists. âThis is nothing. You should see some of the fights me and Ronan have been in over the years. Funnily enough, Ronan pounded on me for a similar reason.â He laughed. âIâm flattered all of you think Iâm so irresistible to your women.â
âIâm not his woman,â she snapped.
âYou sure about that?â Kainâs grin got wider. âNot sure why heâd come at me like the Tasmanian Devil unless he thought so.â He hissed out a breath as his lip split open again. âDamn, you do have a good hook, bruh.â
âBack at you,â I muttered.
âAnytime you want to spar, Iâll show you how to actually hit your target more than twenty percent of the time.
