Chapter Twelve

I was working on my second plate of cheese enchiladas when the mess hall doors whooshed open and in strolled a rather large Coletti warrior in full body armor. I automatically scanned him. Huh? He was masking his power. Wonder why?

The warrior’s helmet retracted, and I found myself staring at Zarek, the Overlord of the Coletti Empire. He gave Vorian a run for his money in the good-looking category. His aura radiated lethal power and one look into his amber eyes, and I knew he would be deadly in a fight. A smile tugged at my mouth. Had he come to investigate the female who could make warriors cluck like a chicken and be pretty in pink?

Amusement flashed across Zarek’s face.

Yes, he had. Summoning my powers, I checked him out. If we fought, I’d lose but not before I did some serious damage. Since he was Sariel’s ally, I’d make nice. I smiled at him and gestured at the plates of chocolate cake in front of me. “Help yourself to some cake and we can talk about whatever is bothering you.”

“I would like that.” Zarek walked over to the food processor and ordered himself a glass of wine.

“Does Sariel know you’re here?”

“He does not.” Sariel took a seat across from me.

I winced. “He’s a bit overprotective since he discovered I’m carrying his child.”

Zarek eyebrows arched in disbelief. “You are pregnant?”

“Yep, kinda surprised me too. Are you angry I made Vorian cluck?”

“Not at all.” Zarek picked up the plate of double fudge cake. “Vorian believed he was invincible, and he needed to be taught otherwise.”

I grinned and handed him a fork. “His mistake was in thinking I’m harmless.”

“You are far from harmless, and you taught Vorian a valuable lesson. As Detja did me many years ago.” Zarek took a bite of his cake.

The Overlord seemed to be enjoying his cake. Hopefully, the chocolate would mellow him out. “Detja kicked your butt?”

“When I first met Detja she drugged me, put me in a transport crate and shipped me to an Alliance penal colony.”

I laughed. “My kind of girl.”

“You are very much alike. Detja is your size and she quickly taught me that a tiny female can be a deadly warrior.”

I was a bit surprised at how proud he was of Detja skills. “I’ve heard some amazing stories about her.”

Zarek finished his cake. “All true.”

“I would love to meet her.”

“That can be arranged.” Zarek drained his wine glass. “Now we will discuss your sister. Skye belongs to the Coletti Empire.”

My temper flared to life, and I fought down the urge to zap him. “She is not an object to be owned.”

“I consider Skye a part of my family. With your help, I want to make her transition as easy as possible.”

“I won’t help you turn Skye into something she’s not.”

A muscle twitched in Zarek’s jaw. “What do you know about the Great War?”

“Not much.”

“In a single moment ten billion of my people died and our home world was turned into a wasteland.
