Chapter Fifteen

Brigid sprawled on one of the comfy couches that occupied this particular reading nook, tucked away on a far side of the fiction wing. Her couch angled toward the doorway so that she could see the entrance without raising her head from the pillow.

A stream came out of the wall from who knew where, trickled in a rocky ledge above moss and fern walls, before pouring down over the doorway in a shimmering waterfall that left just enough space behind and to one side to walk around it without getting wet. It splashed down into a pool that filled the center of the room. Lily pads with blooming white flowers floated in the pool above lazily swimming fish. The occasional frog chirruped or hopped about while dragonflies zipped above the flowers. Several turtles rested on the rocky edge of the pond.

The couches and comfy chairs ringed the little pond with just enough space that a reader wouldn’t accidentally drop a book into the water if the book should slip from their fingers.

Instead of sunlight, a beam of moonlight glittered down from the high window, reflecting on the pond and dancing in shimmering sparks at the base of the waterfall.

Brigid settled more comfortably in the couch. This could be a long night. Rosaline would arrive in a few minutes to report. Hopefully she had information that would point Brigid in the right direction. If the fae continued their pattern, more humans would be snatched from their villages tonight. Brigid didn’t want to miss this chance to stop them.

The Library gave a sharp shudder around her, nearly dumping her from the couch. Brigid pushed to her elbow, glancing around. What was wrong? What had set the Library off? Had more monsters gotten inside?

Chittering came from a whole squirm of bookwyrms near the entrance to the reading nook.

“Get out of my way, you useless worms,” a deep voice hissed, inciting another round of growling from the bookwyrms.

Lord Chauvlyn. Well, this was a complication. What was he doing here?

It didn’t matter what he was doing here. She had to go with it.

Sinking back onto the couch, she draped one hand over the edge and let the other rest over her face. She worked to slow her breathing into a deep, slow rhythm, as if she was sleeping.

Relax. She released a long breath as her body sank against the couch, her muscles going lax. It wasn’t like Lord Chauvlyn could do anything to her here. She was a member of the Court of Knowledge, a court where he was currently a guest. The Great Library itself would rise against him if he attacked her here and now.

What he might suspect when he found her here, that was a different matter entirely.

From beneath the shadow of her draped arm, she watched Lord Chauvlyn through slitted eyes.

He dodged around the bookwyrms, and he had the sense not to kick or otherwise harm them.

The bookwyrms and Library didn’t directly harm him either. They clearly weren’t happy with
