Shari was having breakfast alone on her private balcony, enjoying the river view.

“May I join you?” asked Eduardo, announcing his presence.

“Of course.” She turned to him, smiling.

“Shari, I have a present. I think you’re going to love it.”

“Tell me!” The young girl’s eyes were bright with anticipation.

“No, finish your breakfast and come with me to the airport.”

“I’m finished now. Let’s go.” She stood up quickly and led the way, ignoring the remainder of her papaya.

Thirty minutes later they were standing in a hangar looking at a very strange aircraft.

“What is it?” asked the empress.

“It’s an Apache attack helicopter. I’m told it’s the most sophisticated and deadly assault helicopter in the world.”

“Where did it come from?” she asked, moving towards it in wonder.

“From Nairobi. Before joining our empire, Kenya received a military aid package from the United States and three of these attack helicopters were included. The U.S. wanted Kenya to oppose the terrorists in Somalia and this was the first of the Apaches. The training of one pilot was included.”

“I see,” said Shari, her eyes not leaving the formidable machine. There was respect in her gaze—a warrior sizing up a worthy opponent, or in this case a new ally.

“But after Kenya declared for us, the political situation changed and the United States canceled the remaining two helicopters. So Kenya just has this one, plus the pilot.”

“Why is it here?” Shari's hand reached out, fingers tracing the sleek lines of the Apache's fuselage.

Eduardo smiled. “It’s tribute. The president we installed in Nairobi insisted on making a statement of loyalty, and asked the one pilot in Africa who knows how to fly this thing to deliver it to you, personally, as a gift. The president said he has no idea what he would do with it anyway.”

Shari's eyes sparkled with a mixture of curiosity and excitement. “I love it,” she said, stepping deftly onto a wing stub. Climbing into the cockpit, she ran her hands over the controls, vowing to somehow master them. In her mind, this was not a machine, but an extension of her own body in the same way Shinkendo swords were an extension of her arms.

“What can it do?” she asked.

The prime minister consulted his notes. “This one’s been modified, and has twin miniguns—whatever those are—that can each fire six thousand rounds a minute of something called .308 caliber ammunition. And it can hold up to six Hellfire air-to-ground missiles that can take out tanks, buildings, even small ships. It can fly up to one hundred and forty-two knots and has a range of two hundred and fifty-seven nautical miles. It’s set up for a crew of two, a pilot and gunner, but supports single-pilot operation.”

Climbing out again, she ran her hand along the barrel of a minigun, visualizing its destructive power. No, to truly master this weapon, she must incorporate martial arts discipline. Strike with purpose. Move with grace. And always anticipate the opponent’s next move. Her training had emphasized a defensive mindset—to never be the aggressor. But this attack helicopter was a weapon of conquest.
