Week one
ï²
My first week is nearly over. Iâve been doing nothing but grunt work all week. Honestly, I think the rest of the team doesnât like me very much. It is only a small team of around 20 people, although I donât really know exactly how many people work for James, just the team they have assigned me to. There could be hundreds of people hiding out in this weird underground fortress, itâs huge that I know for sure but I only have limited access, my fob doesnât work for most doors except the room I work in and the lounge room I was stuck in for hours the first time I was brought here. It is not so bad though. It has a comfy couch and the fridge is always fully stocked with goodies which I have utilised several times already.
Itâs not like I can just duck out and get myself a cheeseburger or anything. Once you are in you, stay in, or at least until my ride comes back for me anyway. I still canât get my head around the awesome car wash entrance. I am not allowed to bring the mustang to work. Itâs too conspicuous and I canât argue with their logic. I am one of a very few in my team who gets chauffeured. I like it though, actually makes me feel important. No one else here thinks so. I am at the bottom of the food chain, the bosses pet project that got an easy ride in. No one likes me and no one, except for James it seems, wants me here.
I am the outcast, the black sheep of the group who, as far as the rest of the team goes, does not belong here, doesnât deserve to be here and I think they intend to ride me until I quit. I donât blame them for not wanting me here. Most of them have multiple degrees, have worked their ways through multiple mundane positions in government to get an opportunity to be part of this secret group, and here I am just wandering on through the door at Jamesâ behest without proving myself first. I get it.
I am literally making myself stupider with this job though. I am doing DNS searches and checking through log files. The grunt work you would give a trained monkey to do for you. The only thing that entertains me a little is I get to monitor chatter on the dark web. Keep an ear on the ground for something suspicious or even remotely problematic that the team should know about. I am just a paid intern though, well thatâs how it feels anyway.
Itâs Friday and I am so ready to finish up my first week of this, whatever it is Iâm doing here. At least I am getting paid well and hopefully if I bide my time, the team will trust me a little. Just need to keep doing as I am told, get coffee, get lunch and any other leg work that is needed.
