Chapter 12 - Aiden

By the third day of being holed up in my office, I had a pretty good idea of who was a part of Jasper’s schemes. I started by listing the names of everyone in the pack, considering each person in turn and analyzing their links to each other.

By process of elimination, I was able to narrow my suspects down to a list of about twenty families who had not proven their loyalty in some form to me. A handful of them weren’t ambitious enough to seem like good targets for Jasper to recruit to his cause. Another group was highly risk-averse, so I was able to ignore them as well.

What I was left with was a formidable but thankfully small group of individuals whom I considered suspects.

A few years ago, I may have been brazen enough to haul them in for questioning, but I knew things had advanced too far for that. Jasper liked to collect people who were useful to him, so my goal was to make these people less useful. If I could eliminate his support, perhaps Jasper would fall in line.

If he didn’t…well, that was a thought for another day.

“Charlotte?” I buzzed the intercom to reach the office next door. “Can you come in, please?”

A moment later, the door opened and my secretary entered. Charlotte was in her seventies and had been my father’s secretary before she was mine. We had never been particularly friendly, and we certainly didn’t spend time with one another outside the bounds of our working relationship, but she was the only person in the pack who was, without question, on my side.

“Can you please have these people reassigned from guard duty on pack grounds to patrol as soon as possible?” I asked, handing her a list of names.

She lifted her reading glasses to her eyes and glanced over the list, furrowing her brows in concentration.

“You sure about this?” she asked. “Jasper won’t like it.”

“That’s the point,” I said.

She shrugged and looked back down at the list. “Anywhere in particular you want them assigned to?”

“The northern border would be best, I think.”

She nodded and left to complete her task. The door had only been shut for a moment when it swung open again. In the doorway stood Jasper. His square jaw was clenched as he glared at me intensely.

“I was told you were not to be disturbed,” he said in a huff. “But it’s been days. Have you been holed up with your little girl all this time?”

I felt my hackles rise at his tone but didn’t engage. I took a deep breath before answering. “I’ve been working,” I said calmly.

“Sure you have,” Jasper said dismissively. He seemed to be putting a great deal of effort into maintaining some semblance of composure as he sighed audibly.

He entered the room and sat firmly on the chair across from me, placing his feet up on my desk and settling in. I glared at his shoes, but he didn’t put them down.

“Is there something I can help you with?” I asked.
