* * * *

Panic and dread filled Gabe’s chest as he watched Addison take another step right toward the zombie-fied magical terrorists. He waved both arms like a crazy person as he and Luke started to run at the women. Before they got far though, all the blood drained from Gabe’s face as he saw the worst thing he could possibly see in this moment. One of the men reached into another man’s backpack. The group never stopped walking in their calm, serene fashion. They were still headed straight for the two girls.

“Addison!” Gabe screamed with so much panic in his voice, he didn’t even recognize it.

“Run!” Luke yelled out next to him.

Gabe couldn’t breathe as he watched Addison take another confused step forward. Alexandra pulled hard on her arm one last time before turning away from the oncoming crew. Gabe had no doubt that she knew what was coming. The fact that she had stayed with Addison this long showed just how good her heart was.

It seemed she had stayed too long, though. Horror ripped through Gabe’s soul, stopping his heart, as he watched helplessly as the man threw the glowing orb. It flew through the air, straight at the two women.

Even at their top speed, at this distance and given how quickly the last one had exploded, the realization that they couldn’t reach Addison in time to save her, hit Gabe’s chest. He felt like throwing up and sobbing as the orb hit the ground and rolled within feet of his lover.

“Shit!” Gabe called out.

“Damn it! Run!” Luke’s voice cracked as he screamed.

The next several minutes happened in slow motion for Gabe. Addison looked down at the glowing orb and took a hesitate step back. She obviously still was confused, but then it seemed to hit her. She looked up at the brothers with now pure panic on her face.

Addison turned away from the bomb and the men and took a few running steps, following Alexandra. Gabe knew it was too late, however. The blast would hit them both any second, but just then, a miracle came from an unexpected source.

Luke and Gabe’s legs slowed just marginally as they watched Jett run out of nowhere. He howled out like a wounded animal. The other Revenant ran straight for the orb. He picked it up and continued to run, away from the scene.

Jett disappeared behind a row of high bushes and then the inevitable happened. A giant explosion radiated out from where Jett had last been seen. The ground shook as a fireball rose up into the sky. Gabe’s mind momentarily went blank but his heart started beating again.
