The rest of the day was treacherous. We were made to survive on one apple each. Lauren was no longer able to hold her pack up, so Shep and I split the load. I tried desperately to catch every nuance of the ogres’ conversations. By their shoddy calculations, we were almost to Texas. I hadn’t even gotten the opinions of the others in the group. But once we got to Texas, we needed to make a grand exit.

It just had to be.

I stopped feeling my toes about midday. Mentally chastising myself for not being able to handle a little hiking, the bag that belonged to someone who it seemed had been dead for years, dragged me down inch by inch.

It wasn’t like I’d been couch-bound for years. I hadn’t. I’d worked myself to the bone before Law found me. And after that, I’d chored myself to near death many times over.

So why was simple walking so damned hard?

“Just give it to me.” Law attempted to grab the heavy bag from me, but I weaseled away.

“I got it.” The disappointment on his face was clear, though I couldn’t tell why. He should be in my face telling me how he was right. He wouldn’t do that though, he was a nice guy.

A thought struck me as I continued to walk. I must’ve gasped or something because Law turned his face toward me and shot me a questioning expression. Lawson was probably very good with the ladies before me—before all of this.

“That’s a little heavy for you.” A voice broke me free of my internalized jealousy of people who were either zombified or dead. The bag, was lifted from my grasp with a thieves’ swiftness though my hand still felt the weight of it. I looked up to thank Law, but instead was met with the face of the person I wanted more to smash in the face with the bag rather than have him hold it—Cathal.

A thousand come backs formed in my brain only to get dogged in my throat, never to see the light of day. Instead, I was caught in his smile—sinister and exploratory. His eyes were the faintest of green and I hated him for having amazing eyes while retaining his thug-like reputation.

He walked away, still carrying the bag, while my mouth remained open and unwilling to produce the attacks I wanted it to.

“Oh wow. He so wants you.” Creek appeared on my flank with bogus accusations.

“Shut up. He’s just afraid my arm’s gonna fall off and I’ll get gangrene and get you all infected.”

I shrugged the whole incident off my shoulders and kept pressing forward. I flexed my fist open and shut—it felt light as air. Miles later, Creek was still blabbing about the hotness that was Cathal and how she wished he would look her way. I wished he would too. I had no interest in him.

I mean, he was cute and all, but really, he wasn’t Lawson.

Not even close.

Hearing Law and Shep talk behind me,
