In order to afford her some privacy, I left the RV. I decided to get started on unloading the back of the truck, since there was no one fit enough to help me. I got into the truck and finagled it near our RV for storage.
As the sun rose, Petra exited the RV without giving me a second glance. I knew it was the way it had to be, but I was just so damned glad to see her. Such was the politics of our country now. She wore one of my hoodies and a patchwork skirt. Who had Petra been before? Had she worn a lot of dresses or had she been the tomboy type? None of us were who we were anymore.
Leah approached the fire with a wheelbarrow full of firewood. I continued to unload the truck until everything was stored and organized—then parked the truck back out toward the road in case we needed to get out quickly. I’d have to feel out Odin and see if I needed to get out quicker than I thought.
Leah made a side pot of what looked like Cream of Wheat while I straightened and pretended to be busy. I was really waiting for Petra. She finally came around the other side of the RV looking a shade of green I’d never seen on a person.
“Any better,” Leah prompted her.
“Only half of the bucket of cloths is gone. Maybe it finally stopped coming out of one end. But I heard someone throw up while I was passing. I can’t tell without talking to them, but I’m afraid I’ll get it too.”
“Sit and eat, girl. We need you strong.”
She nodded and sat on the other side of the fire. Leah handed her a steaming bowl of the hot cereal. Petra gave her a soft smile and got up to get a clean communal spoon.
“Wait,” I called out, suddenly remembering something good. I ran into the RV and pulled out the jar of liquid gold I’d stolen.
“Honey,” I offered.
She looked at me like I’d grown a second nose.
“No, I’m not calling you honey. I—I found honey at that house. I thought you’d want something sweet…Christ almighty, I’m just gonna shut up.”
I stomped back to my log and saw that Leah had turned away from us, her large frame shaking from laughter.
“Thank you, Law,” Petra said, trying to tone down a smile. She poured a small amount into her bowl and stirred it around. Holding my breath, I waited for her reaction. When she first came to the camp, I was entranced by her mannerisms and her self-control. She didn’t disappoint.
“Oh man, this is so good,” she commented, closing her eyes. I watched her swallow.
“How are the others?” Odin’s nasal voice broke into my head.
“Who knows? We can’t get close enough to them to tell,” Leah snapped back at him.
“Petra, why don’t you go check on them. We can’t travel until they are better. Maybe you can gauge how they are, and what kind of timeframe we are looking at.
