Chapter Sixteen
I dashed from the interrogation room where I’d been chatting with a middle-age hound and joined Abel, Nicole, Austin, and the Russells in the observation room. After making sure the door was locked behind me, my friends and I gathered around the device. It really was a globe, with a map of all earth on it. Little green dots glowed, marking what I assumed were the locations of hounds in each country. The closer to my face I held the device, the closer the view zoomed until I could see the tiny streets and house where each hound was hanging out.
The globe only worked for me. That didn’t surprise us. Once we learned how it operated, we decided to continue working with the hounds we had on hand before tracking down those that hadn’t been drawn by the Ambulator.
As it turned out, most of the hounds chose to give up their knowledge. Luckily for me, they were tired of who and what they were and were ready for a change.
There were still some, though, who needed to be killed. They were vicious and angry. Motivated by the device, we quickly finished with the hounds we had, and I decided it was time to stake out the remaining ones.
“Wait,” Abel said. “Why can’t we just set up the Ambulator again?”
Nicole shook her head. “It has a recharge time of two days. We won’t be able to use it again until then.”
Too bad. The Ambulator had been so helpful.
We realized there was no way I’d be able to find all of the hounds physically—it would take me months, probably. Neither could I send out hounds to get their comrades—the next idea brought up. That would be fastest, but it would cause a lot of problems. Especially if the messenger hound turned evil while he or she was trying to bring in the others. I hated to say this, but I couldn’t even trust Alexander to do that much. Besides, getting a hold of any of them was nearly impossible—it might take days for Alexander to show up.
“I have an idea,” Austin said.
Everyone turned to look at him.
“We form powerful teams of Aretes who can hold their own against the hounds. Since only Lizzie can use the device, she’ll stay home or at the Russells’ and guide these teams to the various places where hounds are hanging out. The teams will then bring the hounds back, using the white vans we’d discussed purchasing earlier.”
“I like this idea,” Nicole said.
Austin glanced at her. “You’ll stay with Lizzie.”
Nicole stuck out her lower lip in a mock pout. “I don’t get to have any fun.”
I grinned. “It’ll be like old times. You’ve always practically been my bodyguard anyway.” I looked at Abel. “Is it okay for her to stay with me instead of you?”
He met Nicole’s gaze with a steady one of his own. “Of course it is. Nicole has proven herself over and over again. In this case—with her pregnant and me able to
